From the Mi 8 to the Mi Band 3 – here’s everything Xiaomi launched today

Xiaomi hosted its much awaited 2018 Annual Product Launch event in Shenzhen, China today. The brand, fondly known as China’s Apple, took to stage to unveil a bevy of hardware devices. As expected, Xiaomi launched its flagship device – the Mi 8 – at the event along with its variants. Apart from smartphones, the brand also launched a number of other products including a Mi TV, standalone VR headset and the next-generation Mi Band. And if you are wondering what all these devices bring to the table, then here’s a rundown of everything that was launched by the brand. 

Xiaomi Mi 8

Xiaomi announced that it skipped a generation and launched the Mi 8, instead of the Mi 7, because the latest flagship brings a ton of breakthrough technologies and is a massive upgrade over its predecessor. The new handset marks several firsts for the brand including a notch display, face unlock module, and dual-band (L1-L5) GPS. The handset ships with a 6.21-inch sAMOLED display with a resolution of 2,248 x 1,080 pixels and 18.7:9 aspect ratio. At its core ticks a Snapdragon 845 processor, which is mated to 6GB RAM. Xiaomi is offering the smartphone in three configurations – 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. For imaging, the phone offers a pair of 12MP cameras at the back and a 20MP selfie shooter. It boots Android Oreo-based MIUI 10 and is powered by a 3,400mAh battery with Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ fast charging.

Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition

Speculations were rife with the fact that the Mi 8 might come in a transparent colour option. However, it turns out that the transparent device was an entirely new variant altogether dubbed the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition. The Explorer Edition shares its specs entirely with the Xiaomi Mi 8, but comes with an under-display fingerprint scanner. The other addition is the translucent back panel, which looks quite enticing. Additionally, unlike the regular Mi 8, the Explorer Edition is only available in a single variant – 8GB RAM + 128GB storage.

Xiaomi Mi 8 SE

The Xiaomi Mi 8 SE is the smallest of the lot and is a watered-down variant of its sibling. The smartphone ships with a 5.88-inch AMOLED display bearing the FHD+ resolution and a 2.5D curved glass on top. It’s also the world’s first phone to ship with the latest Snapdragon 710 processor, which is fabricated using the 10nm process. Xiaomi is offering the Mi 8 SE in two variants – 4GB RAM + 64GB storage and 6GB RAM + 64GB storage. There’s a 12MP + 5MP module at the back and 20MP selfie shooter at the front. The handset ships with Android Oreo-based MIUI 10 and is fuelled by a 3,120mAh battery.

Xiaomi Mi TV 4 75-inch

Xiaomi also took covers off its largest TV ever with the launch of the 75-inch variant of its Mi TV 4. The screen bears a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels and can support HDR content. The display further offers 60Hz refresh rate, 178-degrees of viewing angles and a response time of 8ms. Moving to the performance aspect, the TV set is powered by a 1.8GHz quad-core Amlogic processor backed by 2GB of RAM and 32GB storage. Like the previous iterations of the Mi TV, the latest Mi TV 4 75-inch also comes with Android-based PatchWall interface.

Xiaomi has announced that the TV set comes equipped with an AI voice assistant, however, the functionality of the same is not known at the moment. Other features include Dolby DTS audio, two 8-watt speakers, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, three HDMI ports, two USB ports, an Ethernet port, and an AV port. There is a voice-controlled Bluetooth remote as well for controlling the TV.

Xiaomi Mi VR Standalone

The Xiaomi Mi VR standalone was developed by the brand in association with the leading VR headset manufacturer – Oculus. As the name suggests, the Mi VR standalone doesn’t require any additional hardware to run virtual reality content. Xiaomi has equipped the VR headset with an LCD panel, which offers a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels. To drive the performance, the brand has equipped the Mi VR Standalone with the Snapdragon 821 chipset. Xiaomi is offering the device in two storage variants– 32GB and 64GB. The headset also supports a 3.5mm audio socket and has already gone up for sale in China starting today.

Lastly, Xiaomi announced its third generation fitness tracker, the Mi Band 3. The device ships with a 0.78-inch OLED display, which shows notifications from the connected smartphone. The band retains fitness features from the last generation including a heart rate monitor and a step counter. According to Xiaomi, the tracker can survive underwater up to the depth of 50 meters and offers a battery backup of up to 20 days. Xiaomi is also offering an NFC-enabled variant of the fitness tracker for offering mobile payments.
