MediaTek’s new Helio P22 SoC is built using a 12nm process and supports Bluetooth 5.0

At this year’s MWC in Barcelona, MediaTek introduced the Helio 60, its first SoC that comes with a dedicated chipset for handling AI tasks and is manufactured utilising a 12nm fabrication process. Today, the chipmaker has unveiled the MediaTek Helio P22 processor, bringing these features to even more affordable price point.  

The MediaTek Helio P22 SoC comes as a successor to the Helio P20, which was unveiled last year. Manufactured with a power-efficient 12nm FinFET process, the chip has eight ARM Cortex-A53 processing units. There’s also a dedicated AI unit, which will support common AI frameworks as per the brand. With MediaTek’s NeuroPilot engine, cameras will also get artificial intelligence benefits for features like face unlock and bokeh mode. In fact, the company claims that AI can also help in getting depth-of-field effects in smartphones that have a single camera.

Speaking of cameras, the new MediaTek SoC is capable of supporting dual rear shooters, comprising a 13MP primary shooter and an 8MP secondary sensor. The chipset also brings support for tall displays with an aspect ratio of as high as 20:9 (1,600 x 720 pixels). 

The Helio P22 also comes with the latest connectivity options, including support for 802.11ac and latest Bluetooth 5.0. The SoC also offers LTE on both SIM cards.

TL Lee, General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communication business unit stated: “With support for high quality dual camera photography, AI enhancements and incredible power efficiency, the Helio P22 sets a new bar for accessibility to premium features. We expect continued device maker wins and consumer growth in this segment with MediaTek’s new Helio P22 chipset.“

As per MediaTek, the Helio P22 processor is currently in volume production. The new SoC will be available in consumer devices like mobiles and tablets by the end of June this year.
