Apple has reportedly started commercial production of iPhone 6s in India
“Another iPhone model is expected to enter the trials for commercial production soon”
It has been little over a year since Apple started manufacturing its budget-friendly iPhone SE smartphone in the Bengaluru facility of the company’s Taiwan-based contract manufacturer Wistron. Now, as per a new report, the company has already started commercial production of the iPhone 6s in India since last week. If this turns out to be true, you will soon be able to purchase made-in-India units of one of the most popular iPhone models of recent times.
A new report from ET, citing two industry executives, states that Apple will now be manufacturing two iPhone models, i.e. iPhone SE and iPhone 6s, locally. This also means that any further changes to the import duties won’t impact the prices of iPhone 6s going forward, just like was the case with iPhone SE earlier this year, as pointed out in the report. Interestingly, it has further been suggested that the company is mulling the expansion of local output and another iPhone model will likely enter trials soon.
“The made-in-India iPhone 6s will be only sold in India like iPhone SE since it will take time to scale up capacity. In fact, Apple will continue with the import of iPhone 6s until capacity improves. Hence, there will be no price correction for the locally manufactured units. The made-in-India iPhone 6s model will hit the stores soon,” one of the executives was quoted as saying in the report.
The local manufacturing of iPhone 6s and the affordable price point is likely to help the brand establish a firm presence in the Indian smartphone market. As the pricing of these models will be not affected by import duties and availability will now only improve, it seems to be a win-win situation for the customers.
