Huawei reportedly working on Kirin 1020, claimed to be twice as powerful as Kirin 970

“Some earlier reports have suggested that the company is working on Kirin 980 SoC based on TSMC’s 7nm manufacturing process”

While most of the smartphone industry has been relying on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets for flagship smartphones, Huawei has stuck to its in-house Kirin chips for the processing requirements in its flagship handsets. Currently, the company’s AI-powered Kirin 970 SoC is the top-of-the-line offering but if new reports are to be believed, the next generation might be coming in really soon with a much-improved performance.

As per a new report from China, Huawei has been working on Kirin 1020 SoC. Notably, some of the earlier reports suggested that Huawei was working on a successor to Kirin 970, called the Kirin 980 SoC, which will be based on TSMC’s 7nm manufacturing process. The more exciting part, however, is that the Kirin 1020 has been tipped to offer a drastic improvement over its predecessor. As per the reports, Kirin 1020 may offer twice the performance offered by the Kirin 970, which itself was no slouch when it comes to processing prowess.

Kirin_thumb.jpgTo give you a fair idea, Kirin 970 is slightly underpowered than Snapdragon 845, which is Qualcomm’s chipset powering the current Android flagship smartphones. If the reports turn out to be true, the next generation of Kirin processors might just be able to match up Qualcomm’s best chipset in terms of performance. This would mean that Huawei’s future flagship handsets will be able to give some serious competition to premium smartphones from other manufacturers.

There are no specific details shared about the upcoming SoC from Huawei but as per the reports, the Kirin 1020 will likely go into mass production upon the wide rollout of 5G network. Talking about the Kirin 980, which is most likely to be introduced earlier in comparison to the Kirin 1020, the system-on-chip has been tipped to be introduced around the launch of Mate 20 smartphone and adopt the Cambricon’s latest AI chip tech as part of the 1M series, as per an earlier GSMArena report.
