Huawei’s leaked patent reveals a truly bezel-less smartphone

“The new patent reveals a completely new housing with dust-proof, waterproof and anti-static properties”

Lately, there have been talks of Huawei working on it next smartphone with a 6.9-inch OLED Samsung display. It was being speculated that this could very well be the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and might be launched later this year or early next year. Now, a new patent design has been spotted online, which shows the innovative way in which Huawei might be implementing an all-display front on its upcoming smartphone.

Huawei Patent

The newest patent leak has been registered by the brand at World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The patent has been titled as “Mobile Communications Device” and reveals that Huawei has devised a new chassis design with thin metal strips on the sides. According to the patent, the conventional frame technology that is used on current smartphones makes it difficult to drastically reduce the bezels.

As per the patent, Huawei will be glueing thin metal strips on all sides of the display and the housing. The new technology is designed to hold the display together and at the same time, offer dust-proof, waterproof and anti-static properties. The design reveals that the touchscreen panel will have recessed sections at the top and bottom edge, and will perfectly nestle in the bottom housing for a snug fit. Once the display, housing, and metal strips have all been put together, the end product will have next-to-none bezels on the sides and very negligible bezels on the top and bottom.

The patent also reveals that this design can be further used on future tablets and notebooks as well. But we can expect it to feature on Mate series smartphones first.
