Qualcomm announces Snapdragon Wear 2500 platform for 4G-enabled kid smartwatches

“The Snapdragon Wear 2500 comes with support for an optimised version of Android for kid smartwatches”

At the ongoing MWC Shanghai 2018, Qualcomm announced the launch of Snapdragon Wear 2500, which is the brand’s first platform targeted specifically for 4G-connected kids watches. Keeping that in mind, the Snapdragon 2500 platform brings along features like low power location tracking, optimised version of Android for kids, and an extended battery life.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2500 platform comes with the company’s certified fifth generation 4G LTE multi-mode modem and provides more accurate location tracking using global navigation satellite system and sensor fusion approach, as per the chipmaker’s claims. For parents who want to keep track of their children’s location properly, this can indeed turn out to be a crucial factor.

Built into a variety of customer devices, the Snapdragon Wear 2500 platform helps children to keep in touch with family, learn and grow with access to rich multimedia content, have fun and play with friends, and stay fit and active throughout the day – while also helping provide parents with peace of mind,” the company said in its press release.

Coming to the battery life, Qualcomm says that the Snapdragon Wear 2500 platform has been designed for low power, with up to 14 percent longer battery life across both active and standby modes of operation compared with the previous generations. “This extended battery life is supported via several new features including: Wearable PMIC, RF Front End (RFFE), location engine, Bluetooth streaming architecture, and processor and modem software optimisations,” the company added.

Qualcomm SnapdragonAs mentioned earlier, the new SoC from the company comes with an optimised version of Android for kid smartwatches which consumes just 512MB memory. This version of Android is based on Android Oreo and has been designed to consume low power with better resource management. The Snapdragon Wear 2500 platform offers four Cortex A7 processors. It also integrates the sensor hub for low power accurate sensing and adds some features aimed specifically at kids. The chip also supports a 5MP camera for video-calling and comes with voice activation as well as support for popular voice assistants.

Qualcomm Technologies further announced that the brand is collaborating with Huawei as the lead customer along with over 10 OEMs who will be utilising the Snapdragon Wear 2500 platform.
