Samsung reportedly aiming to introduce world’s first foldable smartphone; to be launched next year

“The Galaxy-branded foldable smartphone might be released by the first half of 2019”

After the all-screen smartphones, foldable phones will probably be the next big thing. And while quite a few phonemakers seem to be working on the same, Samsung is aiming to be the one to claim the title of the “world’s first”. As per a report in Korea Times, the Chaebol is planning to introduce its Galaxy-branded foldable smartphone by the first half of next year.

Citing Kim Jang-yeol, head of research at Golden Bridge Investment, the publication suggests that the forthcoming handset will have a screen size measuring 7.3-inches diagonally. However, in its folded state, the phone is said to have a 4.5-inch display panel. Park Hyung-woo, an analyst at Shinhan Financial, also confirms the fact, “The new device is an interesting thing as it will have two inside panels and one outside panel with the two inside panels forming the 7.3-inch screen when the phone is unfolded.” Samsung will showcase the prototype to the US and European mobile carriers at CES in January next year, Park added further.

While Samsung’s spokesman Kim Choon-gon didn’t comment on features or specifications of the upcoming smartphone, he confirmed that the South Korean behemoth is working on a phone with a truly foldable display.

It must be noted that Samsung’s foldable smartphone has been leaked quite often over the past couple of years, with the brand filing several patents as well. The report also mentions that Chinese brands Huawei and ZTE are also developing smartphones with foldable displays, and hence Samsung is aiming to beat its rivals by launching its smartphone with the futuristic design first. A Samsung engineer stated: “In a world where Android backers are doing all they can to stand out from the crowd, the reason top-tier smartphone firms are jumping into the market is because foldable designs are different and allow customers to use them one-handed, while also providing a larger high-resolution display when multitasking is desired“.

Kim indicates that the Galaxy-branded foldable smartphone will be priced on the premium side – surpassing even the iPhone X (review) – with an estimated price tag of 2 million won (approx. Rs 1,25,000). While the upcoming Samsung phone might be expensive, we’re hopeful that it’ll usher in a new era of smartphones that offer a larger screen real estate, while being pocketable.
