Samsung’s new Galaxy phone patent shows a bezel-less design with a secondary rear display

“The design patent from Samsung does not show any fingerprint sensor or even a headphone jack on the smartphone”

OPPO has definitely raised the bar for innovative designs with the launch of its Find X smartphone, which features a retractable top that consists of the front camera and other sensors, in China. As Samsung has long maintained a reputation for coming up with innovative smartphone designs in the market, the ball seems to be in the South Korean conglomerate’s court for now. However, if the latest design patent from Samsung is to be believed, the company might be planning to take some bold design choices going ahead.

The latest concept design for Galaxy smartphone (below), submitted by the company to the US Patent and Trademark Office, suggests that Samsung might soon implement a bezel-less design, without any notch, along with a secondary display at the back. While it is not particularly clear yet if the rectangular block at the back is indeed a display or not, there are a couple of omissions that might not please the loyal Samsung customers. As you can see in the concept design images, there is no fingerprint sensor or a headphone jack visible on the smartphone.

At the front, the handset can be seen sporting a very thin bezel on top, which will likely house the front camera and other sensors, and there seems to be no bezel at the bottom of the handset. On the rear, we can see the camera sensor located on top-left, which is an unconventional location for a flagship Samsung handset, and the volume rocker and power keys can be seen located on the right of the smartphone. At the bottom, we have a USB type-C port and speaker grille on both sides of the charging port.

It will be interesting to see if Samsung can manage to introduce an under-display fingerprint sensor on the secondary rear display with this concept smartphone or not. Before we go too far with our expectations, let’s remind ourselves that design patents don’t turn out to be actual products most of the times. However, there is still a possibility that Samsung can take some bits from this design patent to introduce them to the company’s future flagship phones. In any case, we will have to wait for some time before we see any final product as Galaxy Note 9 is expected to be launched in August and there is no chance that the company can introduce the design seen in the patent on such an immediate release.
