SanDisk Ultra UHS-1 400GB microSD card overview: good things come in small packages
“Up close with the SanDisk UHS-1 400GB memory card”
IDC estimates that by 2025, digital data worldwide will surpass the 163ZB mark. For the uninitiated, ZB stands for zettabyte, and one zettabyte comprises a trillion gigabytes. Let that figure sink in for a moment. Humans have a penchant for creating data, be it by clicking digital photos, making videos or designing games. However, thanks to the combined efforts of various manufacturers around the globe, storage technologies have been able to keep up with the rising demand for storing data.
SanDisk of course, is one of the biggest names in the data storage business, and recently, the company sent us its latest memory card in the Ultra series to check out. Well, what makes it different from the other memory cards in the market? I’m glad you asked, as the microSD card I’ve got at the tip of my finger boats a gargantuan 400GB of capacity.
Before we get into the performance this memory card offers, let’s talk about the demographic SanDisk is targeting with the Ultra UHS-1 400GB. If you’re a cautious user who doesn’t rely on the cloud to store personal data, then you should definitely consider investing in the memory card – provided your smartphone can support it. You see, most manufacturers outline the maximum amount of external storage a smartphone can support. Therefore, before you pull the trigger on your purchase, do your due diligence and see if your phone can even accept 400GB of external storage to begin with.
Mobile gaming has really taken off over the last few years and if you’ve managed to get your hands on the Nintendo Switch, then you would probably need an external storage solution as the console comes with a measly 32GB of built-in storage. The SanDisk Ultra UHS-1 is a great option, as it comes with ample storage and fast read/write speeds, allowing you to store and run your favourite games without much hassle. Lastly, the memory card is a good option for drone cameras, as high-res video footage takes up a lot of storage.
Now, as far as the performance of the card is concerned, I subjected the SanDisk UHS-1 to several real-time as well as benchmark tests and got impressive results. Let’s start by talking about the benchmark first. I ran the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test to get a gauge of the SanDisk UHS-1’s read and write speeds. As advertised, the memory card managed to give me a read speed of 90.7MB/s, though the write speeds were a bit lower at 70.2MB/s.
Moving on to some real-world tests, I managed to transfer 5GB of music files from my MacBook to the memory card in a little under two mins, which puts the memory card’s write speeds at around 50MB/s. Up next, I was able to transfer a single 5GB UHD movie file from my MacBook to the memory card in under a minute, which puts the card’s write speeds at around 90MB/s. Lastly, I got excellent read speeds of around 90MB/s from the memory card when I was transferring the same 5 gig video file back to my MacBook Air.
While the read and write speeds of the SanDisk UHS-1 400GB are close to the company’s projections, it’s still not the fastest card in the market. Therefore, if you need quicker transfer speeds, then you should take a look at the company’s Extreme series of memory cards. For anyone else who wants a ton of storage at the tip of their fingers (quite literally), the SanDisk UHS-1 400GB is a no-brainer… though its Rs 19,999 price tag might deter some.
