Top 20 mobile phones in India in May 2018: 91mobiles insights
“Here are the top devices which users searched for in the month of May”
Almost halfway into 2018, and we’ve seen a lot of interesting trends in the smartphone market in India. Not only have we seen the rise and rise of smartphones with the notch displays, but we’re also seeing the proliferation of specs like dual cameras and 18:9 screens to lower price points. But irrespective of the number of launches every month, only a select few manage to either sustain their position or make a mark in consumers’ minds. That’s why we bring you a list of top 20 mobile phones to see which smartphones are the most searched ones on 91mobiles in the month gone by. As usual, it goes without saying that this chart is representative of the popularity of respective handsets, but doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ve sold well in the market too. So without further ado, here’s a look at the rankings in the month of May.
The Top 5
Vivo’s V9 (review) continued to maintain its lead in the month of May as well, but it’s the second smartphone that’s quite surprising. The Samsung Galaxy J6 was launched last month only, and has debuted in the coveted list at an enviable position. The J6 has displaced Xiaomi’s loaded mid-ranger, the Redmi Note 5 Pro (review), to the third place. The latest flagship from OnePlus – the OnePlus 6 (review) – has also jumped 12 spots to reach the fourth position, while the OPPO F7 (review) slipped to the fifth place.
The complete list
It’s not just the table toppers that saw drastic changes in their rankings, as even the top 20 mobile phones have been shuffled along with quite a few new faces in the mix. As usual, along with the names of the smartphones, we’ve mentioned the price band, change in the phones’ positions from the last month and their price band.
Hits and misses
Samsung Galaxy J6: 2nd position
With the Galaxy J6 (first impressions), the South Korean behemoth is aiming to bring the high-end features from its flagship devices to the affordable segment. In fact, the Galaxy J6 is the most affordable smartphone with an Infinity Display. The phone is built around a 5.65-inch display, bearing a resolution of 720 x 1,480 pixels with an aspect ratio of 18.5:9. The device comes powered by an octa-core Exynos processor, which is paired with 3-gigs of RAM.
ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M1: 8th position
The ZenFone Max Pro M1 (review) is the most affordable smartphone that offers Qualcomm’s SD636 chip. Add to it the powerful 5,000mAh battery, dual rear cameras and a 6-inch full HD+ display at the fascia, and the ASUS smartphone matches the popular Redmi Note 5 Pro toe-to-toe. The handset is also the first from the Taiwanese brand’s stable to come with the stock iteration of Android, which stands at v8.1 Oreo.
Vivo Y71: 11th position
While Vivo’s under-display fingerprint scanner-toting smartphone – the X21 (review) – is getting all the attention, the brand also has quite a few offerings in the affordable segment in India. The Y71 was launched recently, and brings forth a bezel-less, 18:9 display which measures 6-inches. Under the hood, the phone is fuelled with the Snapdragon 425 processor, which is supplemented by 3GB RAM.
Samsung Galaxy A6+: 13th position
Similar to the J6, the Galaxy A6+(review) also offers an Infinity Display, which measures 6-inch diagonally. Bearing a resolution of 1,080 x 2,220 pixels, the smartphone draws power from the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 chipset, which is clubbed with 4GB of RAM. The device features a pair of snappers at the back, comprising 16-meg primary shooter and a 5MP depth sensor, as well as a high-res 24MP shooter at the fascia.
Huawei P20 Lite: 16th position
The P20 Lite (first impressions) is the most affordable offering in the Chinese brand’s flagship P20 series, yet it brings latest features such as a notch-toting display, glass sandwich design and a powerful snapper at the front. The smartphone is equipped with Kirin 659 chipset, which is accompanied by 4GB RAM. At the back, the handset offers a dual-camera module, with 16-megapixel and 2MP shooter.
RealMe 1: 20th position
In a bid to beef up its online presence, OPPO has launched an exclusive sub-brand dubbed RealMe. The name is a direct reference to a certain Chinese phonemaker, and the debut smartphone from the company certainly seems to upend the offerings of the rival brand. The RealMe 1 (review) is the most affordable smartphone in India that utilises the power-efficient Helio P60 chipset. The handset also comes with an interesting design language and is available in multiple variants, with 3GB, 4GB or 6GB of RAM and 32GB, 64GB or 128GB storage options.
Trend analysis
While Xiaomi continues to dominate, Samsung slips in popularity
Not just in sales, Xiaomi seems to have found a place in the mind of prospective buyers too. In the month of May, the ‘Apple of China’ had five smartphones in the chart. All the other brands like Samsung, Vivo, Nokia and Honor came a distant second with two devices each. Other manufacturers too, have only one handset in the chart, though it’s quite interesting that as many as 12 brands find a place in the list.
Snapdragon-powered smartphones are the most popular
While it’s not really a surprise, it’s still worth noting how well the San Diego-based chipmaker dominates the smartphone market, at least in terms of popularity. More than half of the devices among the top 20 phones are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon SoCs, with handsets equipped with the other chip vendors like MediaTek, Samsung’s Exynos, Huawei’s Kirin and Apple’s A series trailing behind.
It’d be quite interesting to see if the month of June holds any surprises for us, so stay tuned for the next edition of the top 20 mobile phones.
