Vivo introduces TOF 3D face unlock technology; claims it to be better than Apple’s Face ID
“Vivo’s face ID scanning technology utilises 3,00,000 sensor points to map the user’s face”
Earlier this year, Vivo became the first manufacturer to introduce in-display fingerprint sensors with the launch of the X21 (review). The Chinese electronics giant has also been leading from the front when it comes to smartphones with all-screen fascia as evident with the recently-unveiled Vivo NEX S and NEX A devices. Now the brand is aiming to revolutionise yet another technology. At the ongoing MWC Shanghai, the vendor has introduced its TOF (Time of Flight) 3D face ID tech, which is a 3D depth-sensing system to unlock the phone using user’s face.
Vivo’s TOF 3D face ID 3D depth-sensing system utilises 3,00,000 sensor points, which is being claimed to be 10 times the points in Apple’s Face ID tech. The sensor can be placed on the front of the smartphones next to the selfie camera. Similar to Cupertino giant’s authentication mechanism, this tech works by sending out a pulse of light and calculating the time of flight, which takes to bounce back to its sensor. Vivo touts this technology to be capable of enabling 3D mapping at a distance of up to three meters from the phone.
The brand says that “by combining TOF 3D sensing tech with AI, it will continue to explore new possibilities for a better future”. As per the phonemaker, its TOF 3D face ID can be used to take a full body scan of a user and deliver this information to a beautification AI, which is expected to deliver an improved mode for selfies. In addition, the full body scan information can be used to try on clothes virtually. Also, this tech can also be utilised for gestures and motion recognition.
Vivo hasn’t yet revealed when exactly it is planning to launch a smartphone with its new TOF 3D face ID technology. However, considering that the company has already launched a handful of smartphones featuring under-display fingerprint sensors after showcasing it last year, we hope that it’ll bring the superior face unlock tech sooner than later.
