Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro vs Redmi 6: what’s different
“We compare the notch-toting Redmi 6 Pro with its sibling”
Not too long after launching the Redmi 6, Xiaomi has gone ahead and launched its higher-end model. Dubbed the Redmi 6 Pro, it’s the first offering from the Redmi league to join the ‘notch’ club. It also runs on a Qualcomm processor, which means it has higher chances of arriving in India, since the Redmi 6 is fuelled by MediaTek’s Helio P22 SoC. The Pro variant also boasts a bigger battery than the Redmi 6, but both the phones carry the same dual-camera setup on their back surfaces. Those being the gist of things, let’s now give you a detailed comparison between the Redmi 6 siblings.
Design and display
There are two major differences in the way these phones have been built. Firstly, while the Xiaomi Redmi 6 has a horizontal dual-camera placement, the Redmi 6 Pro model has gone for an iPhone X-like vertical alignment. And the second big distinguishing factor is, of course, the presence of a notch on the fascia of the Redmi 6 Pro. Rear-mounted fingerprint scanners are common for both, while 3.5mm jacks have been retained by them as well. An unwelcome feature on both these phones is the presence of a hybrid SIM slot, which means that you won’t be able to use the second SIM if you’ve inserted a microSD card.
The Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro’s notch-induced display measures 5.84-inches diagonally and bears a 19:9 aspect ratio with a resolution of 720 x 1,520 pixels. As opposed to that, the Redmi 6 adopts a 5.45-inch screen with a resolution of 720 x 1,440 pixels and an 18:9 aspect ratio. Overall, there’s not much difference in the displays of both these phones, so it’s a matter of personal preference between a notch or no notch.
Hardware and software
The Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro runs on an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor which is assisted by 2-, 3- or 4GB of RAM. As for the Redmi 6, its operations are taken care of by an octa-core MediaTek Helio P22 CPU that’s paired with either 3- or 4GB of RAM. Both these chipsets offer admirable performance, so the competition is pretty balanced in this department.
As far as storage goes, the Pro model is available with 16-, 32- or 64GB memory onboard, depending upon the variant you go for. The Redmi 6 only comes in two editions, one with 32GB of storage and the other with 64GB.
Both the phones run MIUI 9 out of the box, which is based on Android 8.1 Oreo. The UI feature quite a few big additions, including an improved notification pane, a split-screen mode, app shortcuts and more. This software even promises up to two times faster app load times and better background memory management. So not only do these phones have a strong hardware, but their software is also optimised to deliver smooth performance.
Camera and battery
The rear-camera modules on both the Redmi 6 Pro and the Redmi 6 are the same. You get a 12MP f/2.2 primary camera and a 5MP f/2.2 secondary shooter. This enables portrait effects, and also allows the phone’s software to render several AI-based features. The front camera of the Redmi 6 Pro is an 8MP one, while that of the Redmi 6 is 5MP in resolution. Both these cameras feature AI-based features and beautification attributes. Perhaps the biggest difference between these two phones is in the battery department.
The Redmi 6 has gone for a 3000mAh cell, which does not compare well with the Redmi 6 Pro’s 4,000mAh unit. You can rest assured that this cell will deliver two-day battery life with moderate usage, especially considering that SD625 is known for its battery efficiency. Sadly though, both phones skimp on the Fast charging support.
Closing thoughts
The pricing of the Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro starts at RMB 999 (~Rs 10,500) and goes all the way up to RMB 1,299 (~Rs 13,500). The Redmi 6 on the other hand, costs slightly lesser with a price tag of RMB 799 (~Rs 8,500) for the base model. While the Redmi 6 Pro is pricier, it surely is an attractive proposition due to its minimal bezels and a powerful 4,000mAh battery. Now if only the brand launches it in the subcontinent…
