Xiaomi Redmi 6 vs Redmi 5: what’s new

Xiaomi is on a launch spree and today it hosted an event in China to unveil its new-generation budget Redmi smartphones. It has launched the Redmi 6 and its more affordable variant, the Redmi 6A, at the event. Xiaomi Redmi 6 vs Redmi 5: what’s changed

The major change this year comes in the form of the chipset of choice as this time the brand has opted for a MediaTek processor instead of the usual Qualcomm Snapdragon chip. Last year’s Redmi 5 was equipped with a 14nm 1.8GHz octa-core Snapdragon 435 processor. The Redmi 6 on the other hand, flaunts the new 12nm 2GHz octa-core MediaTek Helio P22 processor. The 12nm fabrication process of the latter means it promises better battery efficiency and thermal management over the SD450, which has a die size of 14nm.

In terms of memory, while the Redmi 5 came with the base variant starting at 2GB RAM + 16GB storage and going all the way up to 4GB RAM + 64GB storage, its successor comes in two configurations only – 3GB RAM + 32GB storage and 4GB RAM + 64GB storage. The Xiaomi Redmi 6 also gets a dedicated memory card slot as compared to the hybrid SIM slot on its predecessor.

The second major difference between these two handsets is the rear camera module. While the Xiaomi Redmi 5 offered a 12-megapixel rear camera, a secondary 5-megapixel sensor accompanies the 12-megapixel primary shooter on the Redmi 6. Lastly, the Redmi 5 offers a bigger 3,300mAh battery as compared to the 3,000mAh unit powering its successor.

While there aren’t many similarities, both smartphones come with IPS LCD display with an aspect ratio of 18:9 and an HD+ resolution. However, the Redmi 6 has a slightly smaller display of 5.45-inch as compared to 5.7-inch on the last-gen phone. Speaking of the fascia, both the Redmi 5 and Redmi 6 get a 5-megapixel selfie shooter. However, Redmi 6 does get a dedicated selfie flash to offer better selfies in low light.

On the software front, the Redmi 6 boots MIUI based on Android Oreo. On the other hand, while Redmi 5 comes with Android Nougat-based MIUI, Xiaomi has already rolled out an Oreo update for the handset as well.

As you can see, Xiaomi’s Redmi 6 brings substantial improvements over its predecessor, the Redmi 5. While that may not be enough to upgrade from the Redmi 5 itself, if you are using an older-gen Redmi smartphone, then the latest offering definitely makes for a great option.
