How Vivo’s NEX is defining the future of smartphones
“The Vivo NEX is the first smartphone that gives us a glimpse into the future of smartphones to come”
2017 was the year when bezel-less phones took over the smartphone industry. That said, while they were referred to as “bezel-less”, that was far from reality. All of those devices sported a peculiar bezel in some form or the other – significant chins, slim top and bottom bezels, or the distracting notch. But all that has changed in 2018, with companies like Vivo leading the charge to slim down the bezels even more. The latest in Vivo’s portfolio of smartphones is the NEX – a gorgeous smartphone with powerful internals. In fact, we can go as far as to say that the Vivo NEX is going to define the future of our smartphones. Here’s why we think so.
Hasta la vista, bezels

If you’re one of those people who just hate the idea of having a phone with a notch display, you’re in for a treat. The Vivo NEX does not sport any kind of notch whatsoever. But then it will surely be having a significant top or bottom bezel, right? Wrong.
The canvas on the NEX is surrounded by virtually non-existent bezels on three sides, and a very slim chin on the bottom. In fact, at first glance, you might mistake the smartphone as a device straight out of a sci-fi movie set in the future. What you get eventually is a beautiful 6.59-inch full HD+ Super AMOLED display, which offers one of the most immersive experiences on a smartphone.
A camera that pops up to capture special moments

All this bezel-less innovation has meant that there is no space for the front-facing camera anywhere on the smartphone… or so you may think. The Vivo NEX comes with a unique 8MP motorised pop-up selfie camera that’s there only when you need it. While some people are sceptical about having moving parts in a smartphone, Vivo claims it has tested the mechanism more times than anyone would likely use it in the smartphone’s lifetime.
An in-display fingerprint scanner

On one hand, brands like Samsung and Apple are yet to come up with even one device, which sports an in-display fingerprint scanner. On the other hand, Vivo has already released X21 flaunting the feature. The Vivo NEX is no different as it also comes with an improved under-display fingerprint scanner. A front fingerprint scanner tackles the main problem of a rear fingerprint scanner – that you cannot use it while your phone is lying on a desk. On the other hand, having the tech underneath the display allows the phone maker to fill the entire fascia with a big display. It’s a win-win situation if you ask us.
SoundCast: a funky name for a funky innovation

Filling the fascia of a smartphone entirely with display also means you do not have any place to put in an earpiece. But surely, you cannot have a phone like that, right? Vivo tackled this hurdle with a tech dubbed SoundCast. What happens is that the phone’s display vibrates microscopically to produce the sound. In other words, it’s a sound-emitting display. How cool is that? What this also means is that you could be holding your phone upside down, and you’ll still be able to hear all the sound crystal clear.
Jovi AI

Artificial intelligence seems to be a must-have feature in smartphones of the future. And to ensure that the NEX is ahead of the competition, Vivo has equipped the handset with its very own Jovi AI smart assistant. It boasts natural language understanding, automatic speech recognition, text-to-speech conversion, and even emotion detection. Additionally, the company has also included a dedicated Jovi AI assistant button for the same. But that’s not all. The smartphone comes with even more AI-powered features including smart filters and HDR mode in the optics department.
Phew. These impressive features suggest how the Vivo NEX aims to define the future of smartphones. But there’s one more subtle difference between the NEX and other futuristic smartphones of the past – it’s not just a concept. In fact, Vivo has also included top-of-the-line hardware specifications in the smartphone, meaning you won’t need to compromise even one bit. A Snapdragon 845 processor, 8GB of RAM, a gigantic 4,000mAh battery and a capable 12MP+5MP dual rear camera setup, Android Oreo – the NEX checks all the right boxes. We can’t wait for the smartphone to launch in India. Can you?
