Huawei has announced that it will be present on the floor at this year’s IFA in Berlin. The company will be holding a press event on August 31st, but the brand hasn’t yet revealed the device(s) to be unveiled at the conference. If the reports are to be believed, Huawei will be unveiling its next-gen flagship SoC, the Kirin 980 at the event. The processor’s complete specs have already been leaked ahead of the launch next month.

As per the leaks, the Huawei Kirin 980 processor could be based on TSMC’s 7nm FinFET fabrication process, making it the first Huawei SoC to utilise this technology. The chipset is rumoured to arrive with a new Cambrian NPU (Neural Processing Unit), which is expected to offer improved photography experience on smartphones powered by this SoC. The Kirin 980 is said to feature a maximum clock speed of 2.8GHz for the four Cortex A77 cores, and an unspecified clock speed for the four other Cortex A55 cores.

The Huawei Kirin 980 SoC is rumoured to support a screen resolution of up to 3,840 x 2,160. The processor is said to offer support for dual-channel LPDDR4X and cameras up to dual ISP. On the GPU side, Huawei is said to introduce its own graphics processing unit, which will be 1.5 times faster than Adreno 630 that’s present on the Snapdragon 845 processor.

If the reports are to be believed, the upcoming Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro could be the first smartphones to be powered by the new Kirin 980 processor. We should have more details in a couple of weeks, so stay tuned.
