Huawei Nova 3i vs P20 Lite: mid-range siblings in the ring
“The Nova 3i and P20 Lite are toned-down variants of the Huawei Nova 3 and P20, respectively”
Recently, Huawei launched the Nova 3 (review) to take on the OnePlus 6 (review), but it had one more device in store for us in the form of the Nova 3i. Similar to the Nova 3, the mid-ranger also comes with four cameras, two on the front and two at the back. Interestingly, with the asking price of Rs 20,999, the handset will be competing against the brand’s very own, P20 Lite (first impressions), which carries a price tag of Rs 19,999. If you are wondering which smartphone should you go for, then you have come to the right place. Here’s a detailed comparison of the Huawei Nova 3i with the P20 Lite.
Design and display
In terms of looks, both the devices will end up impressing you. They ship with Huawei’s much-loved colour shifting back surfaces which make them extremely pleasing to the eyes. The vertically-aligned dual cameras and the placements of the fingerprint scanner along with the Huawei logo give the devices a similar appearance, at least from the back. On the front too, things are identical.
If you look closely however, you’ll notice that the notch on the Nova 3i is slightly longer to fit the dual front cameras. Also, the P20 Lite incorporates another Huawei logo underneath the display, which is not present on the other handset.
The display of the Huawei Nova 3i is a 6.3-inch panel with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,340 pixels, while the one on the P20 Lite is smaller and measures 5.8-inches with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,280 pixels. Needless to say, both the displays feature tall aspect ratios that make them immersive.
Hardware and software
Huawei’s proprietary Kirin chipsets can be found in both these handsets. However, the Nova 3i comes with the brand’s latest Kirin 710 SoC which is a 12nm chipset and offers a 2.2GHz octa-core CPU and a Mali-G51 graphics unit. As for the P20 Lite, it has adopted the tried-and-tested Kirin 659 chip which delivers a 2.3GHz octa-core processor and a Mali-T830 GPU. Both the handsets ship with 4GB of RAM.
The Indian model of the Nova 3i is being sold with 128GB of storage, while the Huawei P20 Lite offers 64GB of memory onboard. Both these devices come with microSD card slots with the hybrid SIM configuration.
Android Oreo is running the show on these smartphones, which is overlaid with the brand’s custom EMUI software. The UI has been packed with a ton of AI features geared towards their cameras. Both phones also come with the face unlock functionality. An interesting trait exclusive to the Nova 3i is QMOJI, which is Huawei’s version of Apple’s Animojis. This phone also offers an AI shopping feature that lets you scan images to find what products are present in them.
Camera and battery
Huawei has equipped the Nova 3i with a 16MP camera accompanied by a 2MP snapper. Its front has been adorned with a whopping 24MP shooter and a 2MP depth sensor. The rear camera setup of the P20 Lite also includes a 16MP + 2MP combination, while its front comes fitted with a 24MP camera. Both these phones come packed with several AI features like scene recognition, HDR Pro and more.
The battery on the Huawei Nova 3i is slightly larger than the one on the P20 Lite. While the former ships with a 3,340mAh unit, the latter comes with a 3,000mAh cell. Both handsets also come with fast charging, but Nova 3i’s charging is a little speedier than that of the P20 Lite.
Closing thoughts
Both these phones come with highly attractive designs, immersive displays and great camera setups. However, for an extra Rs 1,000, the Huawei Nova 3i comes with a better chipset and dual front cameras as compared to the P20 Lite, which gives it a clear edge.
