Huawei’s Kirin 980 SoC tipped to offer an octa-core chipset with 2.8GHz clock speed

“Huawei is expected to unveil the next-generation top-tier chipset at this year’s IFA event in Berlin”

Last year, at the IFA event held in Berlin, Huawei took covers off its high-end HiSilicon Kirin 970 chipset. It was the brand’s first chip to come with a dedicated Neural Processing Unit to enable AI-based features across the board. Now, if the reports are to be believed, the next-generation HiSilicon Kirin 980 processor is expected to be announced at this year’s IFA. Ahead of the expected launch, a new leak has revealed the purported specs of the upcoming processor including its CPU configuration.

According to the latest reports, the Kirin 980 SoC will come in 4 + 4 cluster setup with a clock speed of 2.8GHz. Of these, four Cortex-A77 cores will be performance-oriented, whereas, the remaining four Cortex-A55 cores will be ensuring power efficiency. The chipset is expected to be built on the 7nm FinFET process, which will be smallest die size in the world, if true. The SoC is also said to feature an in-house GPU unit by HiSilicon, which is speculated to be 1.5 times faster than the Adreno 630, which ships with Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 845 chipset. Another report claims that the upcoming chip will feature the newest AI chip technology from Cambricorn, which will offer an improved NPU onboard. It’s being expected that Huawei’s upcoming Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro will be the first smartphones to utilise the forthcoming processor.

Speaking of the Mate 20 Pro, the smartphone was recently spotted on the 3C certification website, revealing 40W fast charging support. The smartphone is speculated to retain the same triple-camera module of the Huawei P20 Pro (review). Which means, it can come with a 40MP primary RGB sensor accompanied by a 20MP monochrome shooter and an 8MP telephoto lens. The smartphone is also speculated to flaunt an under-display fingerprint scanner. As far as the design is concerned, the metal-clad smartphone is expected to come with a bezel-less display with an aspect ratio of 18:9 or more.

According to the rumours, the brand is expected to launch these smartphones in October. We will bring you more updates, as and when they emerge, so stay tuned.
