Leaked firmware hints Xiaomi’s POCOPHONE with Snapdragon 845 might be headed to India

“The Xiaomi POCOPHONE is expected to be a high-end smartphone with a dual camera module and an 18:9 display”

Before Xiaomi launched the Xiaomi Mi 8 (first impressions), the Mi 8 SE (in pictures) and the Mi 8 Explorer Edition, there were rumours that the brand was working on four SD845-powered smartphones. While three of these turned out to be Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S (first impressions), the Mi 8 and the Mi 8 Explorer Edition, there was no word on the fourth device. However, it looks like the smartphone in question has finally surfaced online as folks at XDA-Developers have managed to obtain alleged firmware files for the fourth handset. If the reports are to be believed, then an Indian, as well as a global variant of the Xiaomi POCOPHONE, could be in the works.

Xiaomi Firmware leak

According to sources, the fourth smartphone has been codenamed Beryllium in the firmware files and it could possibly be the upcoming POCOPHONE. As per the leak, the upcoming handset is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 845 processor and will ship with a notch-based LCD display. The smartphone is likely to be powered by a 4,000mAh battery and boot Android 8.1 Oreo from the get-go. Other features include non-expandable storage, a fingerprint scanner, dual cameras with optical zoom and NFC.

Further, XDA reveals that they uncovered two firmware files namely “Beryllium” and “Beryllium_global”, with the latter being self-explanatory. However, the former hints towards an India-specific model owing to two entries in the MIUI Camera application dubbed “isIndiaBeautyFilter” and “getDualCameraWaterMarkFilePathVendor.” Both these methods check a build property called “ro.boot.hwc”, which returns true only if it’s set to “India”.

The “isIndiaBeautyFilter” method performs this check when IS_E7S or IS_E10 is true.  Now, according to folks at XDA, IS_E7S is true for Redmi Note 5 Pro (review) and IS_E10 is true for Beryllium. On the other hand, the “getDualCameraWaterMarkFilePathVendor” uses a special watermark file called “dualcamera_india”, when “ro.boot.hwc” is set to “India” and if IS_E10 is true.

Consequently, it’s safe to assume that the upcoming smartphone which has been codenamed Beryllium could get an India-specific variant. What leads XDA to believe that the smartphone could, in fact, be the much-rumoured POCOPHONE is due to the use of E10 in the model number (M1805E10A), which is the same as the IS_E10 variable in the firmware files. Therefore, while it’s still a far-fetched speculation, it is possible that this could be the first POCOPHONE from Xiaomi and that India could act as a launchpad for the brand’s latest smartphone.
