MediaTek introduces Helio A22, an AI-centric SoC for mid-range smartphones
“The Helio A22 is a quad-core processor based on 12nm fabrication process”
MediaTek has unveiled its new A series of processors with the launch of the Helio A22. The brand’s newest SoC is a budget offering that brings artificial intelligence features to mid-range smartphones. The company says that the Helio A22 is based on its CorePilot technology, which is claimed to provide high performance, long battery life, advanced photography features, and AI enhancements. Notably, the Xiaomi Redmi 6A, which was launched in June, is the first smartphone to utilise the MediaTek Helio A22 SoC.

The MediaTek Helio A22 processor is based on TSMC’s 12nm fabrication process. The company says that the SoC is 30 percent faster and its GPU is up to 72 percent faster than the competition. The processor packs a few AI-based enhancements like Face Unlock and smart photo albums. The SoC is packed with MediaTek’s NeuroPilot support, which ensures developers and manufacturers have the best possible AI-ecosystem, with full compliance with Android Neural Networks API. The processor supports full HD video recording at 30fps, and comes with single / dual-cam bokeh effect and multi-frame noise reduction.

Talking about other features, the MediaTek Helio A22 processor offers dual 4G SIM support with VoLTE and ViLTE, and is capable of delivering Cat-7 (DL) 4G LTE speeds. The SoC is equipped with TAS 2.0 smart antenna technology, which utilises the best antenna combination to provide optimal signal quality at lowest power use. The other connectivity features include eMBMS, HUPE, Band 71, advanced IMS, dedicated sub-processor for 4-satellite multi-GNSS (GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo), Bluetooth 5, and Wi-Fi (802.11ac).
The MediaTek A22-powered Xiaomi Redmi 6A is already up for grabs in China, and is expected to launch in India in the near future. News is that more devices powered by this SoC could also be launched later this year. So, stay tuned for upcoming information on this.
