Nokia X5 vs Nokia X6: notch-toting mid-ranger siblings compared

Earlier this year, Nokia launched its first smartphone with a 19:9 aspect ratio, the Nokia X6 (first impressions). Today, the handset maker has now gone ahead and launched the second smartphone in the X series – the Nokia X5. Both smartphones are priced in the mid-range and feature a display notch, so it’s but natural that both of them will be pitted against each other. So without further ado, here’s a detailed comparison between the Nokia X5 and X6.

Design and display

Before we start talking about the design, bear in mind that the Nokia X5 is a much more affordable option than its pricier sibling. Perhaps that’s why the Nokia X6 looks premium because of the use of glass on both front and rear panel. While the Nokia X5 also flaunts the same glossy finish on both sides, it sports a polycarbonate frame. Another noticeable difference is the size of the display notch on both phones, which is a tad larger on the Nokia X5, even though there’s no new sensor. In terms of the placement of buttons and ports, both handsets are identical. 

Coming to the display, the siblings flaunt the latest 19:9 aspect ratio on a display measuring 5.8-inches. However, the X5 features a resolution of 1,520 x 720 pixels, as compared to the crisper full HD+ resolution on the Nokia X6. Further, the Nokia X6 also gets the protective layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on top.

Hardware and software

While the Nokia X5 is powered by MediaTek’s powerful mid-range processor, Helio P60, the X6 comes equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 636 chipset. MediaTek’s offering comes with a die size of 12nm, as compared to the 14nm fabrication of SD 636 and as such is expected to be more power efficient, at least on paper. As per benchmarks however, both chipsets are at par with each other in day to day usage. The Nokia X6 comes in three variants – 4GB RAM + 32GB storage, 4GB RAM + 64GB storage, and 6GB RAM + 64GB storage. On the other hand, Nokia X5 is being offered in two options of 3GB RAM + 32GB storage and 4GB RAM + 64GB storage.

Coming to the software, both the Nokia X6 and X5 are Android One smartphones and boot stock Android 8.1 Oreo. The phones are also entitled to the next two major Android upgrades.

Camera and battery

Shifting the spotlight (pun intended) to cameras, both the Nokia X5 and X6 come flaunting a dual rear camera module. While the Nokia X5 ships with 13MP + 5MP setup, the X6 flaunts a pair of 16-megapixel and 5-megapixel shooters. For selfies, the X6 offers a higher-res 16MP sensor on the front, whereas the X5 comes with an 8MP sensor. The phones also get the proprietary Bothie mode from the brand, which lets users capture images from both front and rear cameras at the same time.

For power requirements, both the Nokia X5 and X6 get an identical 3,060mAh cell.

Closing thoughts

The Nokia X5 has been priced at RMB 999 (~Rs 10,000) for the base model, while the starting price of the Nokia X6 is RMB 1,299 (~Rs 13,000). While it’s clear that both smartphones are targeting at different segments, it’s good to see the newest launch retaining a similar form factor, dual rear cameras and an equivalent processor in comparison to its pricier sibling. Now if only these smartphones come to the Indian market, though a report does suggest that the X6 is heading to the subcontinent soon.
