OPPO Find X vs Samsung Galaxy S9+: when the present meets the future
“The OPPO Find X is one of the most innovative smartphones to come in recent times, but can it take on Samsung’s loaded flagship?”
This year has been a rollercoaster ride for the smartphone industry in terms of innovation. We witnessed Samsung’s much-anticipated Galaxy S9+ (review), which encapsulated everything premium, right from a modern display to the dual-aperture rear camera. We then witnessed what appeared to be the future of flagship smartphones with the Vivo NEX (first impressions) flaunting its motorised selfie camera. However, OPPO upped the ante with its Find X, which features a pop-up mechanism with both dual rear cameras and a selfie shooter crammed in it. Considering that the futuristic Find X has just been launched in India, we decided to pit it against the reigning champ representing the present – the Samsung Galaxy S9+. Stay with us to find out which one’s better.
Design and display
There are no two thoughts about it, you cannot help but marvel at the aesthetics of these two smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy S9+ happens to be one of the most stunning smartphones today with its premium glass sandwich design with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on each side and curved edges on both panels. However, the Samsung Galaxy S9+ follows a ‘conventional’ design on the back as it houses vertically-aligned dual cameras with a fingerprint scanner.

On the contrary, the OPPO Find X takes aesthetics a notch higher, as it basically appears to be a single slab of glass with a clean front and back panel. The brand has managed to attain this with the help of single motorised mechanism that lifts a separate panel within the top of the handset to reveal the dual rear camera setup and front camera along with the 3D face module. OPPO’s offering also features industry-leading screen-to-body ratio of 93.8 percent, which is significantly higher than the S9+, which continues with dual-curved display and slim bezels at the top and bottom. Therefore, when it comes to looks alone, the Find X is surely miles ahead. However, there are concerns over the longevity of the pop-up module since it also houses the face unlock system and slides out every time you need to unlock the phone.
Coming to the display, both these flagship smartphones utilise AMOLED displays, measuring 6.4-inches and 6.2-inches for the OPPO Find X and Samsung Galaxy S9+, respectively. However, Samsung takes the cake when it comes to resolution as it offers a Quad HD+ resolution as compared to 1,080 x 2,340 pixels on the Find X.
Hardware and software

When it comes to the performance, the Samsung Galaxy S9+ gets Exynos Octa 9810 chipset mated to 6GB RAM . In contrast, the OPPO Find X utilises the Snapdragon 845 chipset backed by 8GB RAM. Both processors are at par with each other, making the S9+ and Find X one of the fastest smartphones that money can buy today. As for storage, the Samsung phone comes with 64GB storage and support for up to 400GB microSD card. The Find X on the other hand, offers 256GB of native storage with no support for expansion.
In the software department, both flagships ship with Android Oreo as the base. The Samsung Galaxy S9+ runs custom Samsung Experience 9.0 layer on top, which offers a ton of useful features such as Samsung Bixby, Samsung Pay and Knox Security. The OPPO Find X gets ColorOS 5.1 custom skin, which comes with AI camera features, gesture-based navigation and more.
Camera and battery

Coming to the imaging, the OPPO Find X ships with a 16MP + 20MP camera setup on the rear panel, both with f/2.0 aperture. In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S9+ comes with 12MP + 12MP setup, with a dual aperture of f/1.5 and f/2.4 that can change automatically depending upon the ambient lighting. Notably, the f/1.5 is the widest-available aperture on a smartphone yet, making the S9+ ideal for low-light imaging. However, it’s the selfie camera where the Find X shines as it comes with a 25MP front sensor with 3D facial recognition and AI effects. In contrast, the S9+ comes with an 8MP snapper on the front.
In terms of the battery, both smartphones flaunt a beefy cell. The OPPO Find X is equipped with a 3,730mAh unit, whereas the Samsung Galaxy S9+ comes with 3,500mAh pack. While the S9+ does come with the fast charging support, OPPO’s offering features VOOC technology that’s marginally faster.
Closing thoughts

To summarise, this has been a battle of the equals. On one hand, the OPPO Find X is miles ahead of the Samsung offering when it comes to design and innovation. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S9+ is as premium as it gets and even though it comes with an expensive price tag. That said, there’s no doubt that the Find X will usher in innovation in terms of the smartphone design like never before.
