Sony IMX586 camera sensor for smartphones with the world’s highest 48-megapixel resolution

“The Sony IMX586 is an industry-leading sensor with 0.8 μm pixel size”

The Japanese giant, Sony is considered to be an expert in the mobile imaging. The image sensors manufactured by the brand are used by most smartphones in the market, including Apple. Now, staying true to the spirit, the brand has announced the IMX586, which is the world’s first camera lens to come with 48 effective megapixels crammed into one camera sensor.

This isn’t the first time we have seen a sensor with more than 40MP resolution, cue Nokia 808 PureView and Huawei P20 Pro (review). However, Sony’s latest is the industry-first with the highest pixel count of 48-megapixel and is expected to be a more mainstream solution. Sony has managed to achieve this by reducing the pixel size to 0.8 μm, which happens to be the smallest in the market as of now. While smaller pixel size results in grainy images in low light, however, Sony has used the quad Bayer colour filter array to get around this issue. What this means is that each pixel will use light signals from four adjacent pixels, raising light sensitivity to be along the lines of a 12-megapixel image captured with 1.6-micron pixel size.

The new CMOS sensor promises to improve image quality by offering a resolution of 8,000 x 6,000 pixels. Moreover, the brand claims that the new sensor is capable of recording 720p videos at 480fps, full HD videos at 240fps and 4k videos at 90fps. The brand is also touting that the IMX586’s dynamic range is four times better than the conventional sensors. Sony has also managed to keep the size of the sensor down to 8mm diagonally, which means the lens will not have a massive camera bump. The brand also claims that the latest sensor will be able to produce actual usable 48-megapixel images without downsampling them and will offer a much better digital zoom as well.

As per the company, the Sony IMX586 sensor will start shipping on smartphones next year and the samples will be sent out in September this year. The brand has priced the sensor at 3,000 Yen (~Rs 1,890) apiece.
