Vivo NEX vs OnePlus 6: loaded flagships fight it out
“Both the Vivo NEX and OnePlus 6 are compelling smartphones”
When Vivo first unveiled the NEX (review), it was hard to believe just how many innovations this phone packs in. With its bold design decisions, it showed the world that it’s indeed possible to make a bezel-less screen minus the notch. And it didn’t stop at just that, as it even comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner, an innovation that Vivo itself had first brought into the market. At Rs 44,990, it’s quite an interesting proposition, but it is facing tough competition from the OnePlus 6 (review), more exactly, its 256GB model which costs Rs 43,999. So if you are confused between which smartphone to go for, then here’s a detailed comparison to help you make a decision.
Design and display
On the aesthetic front, the most striking difference between the two phones is the notch. While the NEX gives you almost a full-screen fascia, the OnePlus 6 has a notch on its front surface which spoils the show. Both the devices do have slight chins at the bottom, but they don’t take much away from their looks. In terms of buttons, along with the usual options, the NEX has a dedicated key for summoning Google Assistant, while the OnePlus 6 has the much-loved alert slider. It’s good to know that both the devices have retained the headphone socket. The notch on the OP6 sports the front camera and other sensors. The Vivo handset on the other hand, has come up with various innovations to hide these sensors, while the front camera is hidden with a pop-up mechanism. This allows the shooter to appear quickly as soon as you switch to the front camera.
The rear camera placement on both smartphones is pretty standard. But the OnePlus 6 gets the fingerprint scanner at the back, while the NEX makes use of an under-the-display optical sensor. That said, the in-screen fingerprint reader isn’t as fast as the conventional biometric sensor on the OP6. Additionally, Vivo’s offering misses out on the face unlock feature, which can be found on OnePlus’ smartphone.
At the front, the Vivo NEX features a 6.59-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,316 pixels and 19.3:9 aspect ratio. The screen is able to offer gorgeous visuals, and is made all the more immersive thanks to the bezel-less approach. Except for the notch, everything about the OnePlus 6’s display amazing, though you do get an option to disable the cut-out. The phone has a 6.28-inch Optic AMOLED panel bearing a resolution of 1,080 x 2,280 pixels with an aspect ratio of 19:9.
Hardware and software
The Snapdragon 845 is all the rage right now, and sure enough, both the phones have chosen to adopt this Qualcomm chipset. This top-of-the-line chip promises blazingly-fast performance and smoother graphics among other things. The Vivo NEX boasts 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Since we’re looking at the top-end model of the OnePlus 6, you get 256GB of storage along with 8GB of RAM. Both smartphones omits the microSD card slots, though they do offer ample storage onboard. These devices come with all the needed sensors, but the NEX skimps upon the NFC, which is available on the OP6.
With the NEX, you get an Android 8.1 Oreo-based Funtouch OS 4. This software carries all the bells and whistles that previous Vivo devices are known for. This includes an iOS-inspired interface, complete with a Control Centre that slides up from the bottom as well as navigation gestures. The software on the OnePlus 6 is a near-stock version of Android 8.1 Oreo, sprinkled with some nifty additions like a custom launcher, useful customisations and more.
Camera and battery
The rear camera setup of the NEX includes an OIS-assisted 12MP f/1.8 camera and a 5MP f/2.4 secondary unit. Several AI features form part of the experience here, including scene recognition and a handy Portrait Framing feature that helps you frame your shots better using artificial intelligence. In contrast, the OnePlus 6 flaunts a 16MP f/1.7 shooter that’s assisted by both EIS and OIS, and a 20MP f/1.7 secondary sensor. Apart from the capability of recording 4K videos at 60fps, this phone can also capture slow motion videos at 480fps. Its front camera is also impressive, as it’s rated at 16MP with f/2.0 aperture. Vivo’s smartphone loses out in this front (quite literally) as it features an 8MP f/2.0 selfie shooter.
Both these phones promise superb battery life. The NEX is fuelled by a 4,000mAh unit, while the OnePlus 6 relies on a 3,300mAh cell. Both phones boast fast charging, but thanks to the Charge technology, the OP6 comes slightly ahead in this department.
Conclusion
There’s no denying the fact that both these devices are solid, all-round offerings that aim to deliver bang for your buck. Hence, it all comes down to the personal preference. The Vivo NEX could be the choice of those who like dabbling in cutting-edge technology and are allured by the full-screen experience provided by it. The OnePlus 6 does not have a full-screen front surface, but it seems to offer better cameras and faster fingerprint scanning. So which smartphone you go for? Let us know in the comments below.
