Honor Play vs Huawei Nova 3i: heating up the mid-range

“The Honor Play comes as a budget gaming smartphone from the brand”

The Chinese handset maker, Huawei and its subsidiary – Honor have been on a launching spree in the India handset market lately. Huawei recently launched its latest Nova series smartphones – the Nova 3 (review) and Nova 3i, with the latter being a launch vehicle of the brand’s in-house 12nm Kirin 710 chipset. Honor, on the other hand, has just launched its budget gaming smartphone – the Honor Play (first impressions) in the subcontinent in the same price segment. As such, it’s natural to wonder which smartphone should you pick up. Well, to make it easier for you, here’s a comparison between the Honor Play and Huawei Nova 3i.

Both the Honor Play and Huawei Nova 3i represent two ends of the design spectrum. The Honor Play comes with a unibody metal chassis, with a matte finish on the back. In contrast, the Nova 3i is one of the most gorgeous-looking smartphones at this price point. The handset comes with an all-glass build, with its two-tone finish-toting Iris Purple variant being a looker, in particular. That said, the phone attracts smudges and fingeprints.

Coming to the display, both the Honor Play and Nova 3i feature a 6.3-inch display with the cut-out on top. Both screens flaunt an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and a screen resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels. A layer of 2.5D curved glass can be found on both devices.

Coming to the performance, the Huawei Nova 3i comes equipped with the octa-core Kirin 710 chipset. The SoC is paired with 4GB RAM and offers 128GB storage onboard. In comparison, the Honor Play gets the flagship HiSilicon Kirin 970 processor and either 4GB or 6GB of RAM, depending on the variant. The native storage is a 64GB, which is further expandable by adding a microSD card. Both these smartphones boast the GPU Turbo Technology, which is claimed to improve graphics performance by 60 percent and reduce battery consumption by 30 percent. However, there’s no denying the fact that the Honor Play gets an upper hand here because of the flagship processor.

On the software front, both handsets run EMUI 8 based on Android Oreo.

In the imaging department, both these phones get dual-camera modules on the rear panel with identical sensors. There is a 16-megapixel sensor with LED flash and a 2-megapixel secondary shooter for offering the depth-of-field effect. The phones also come with AI-enabled automatic scene detection and portrait mode. For selfies, the Honor Play flaunts a 16MP shooter on the front. Selfie lovers are bound to prefer Nova 3i though, as it comes with a 24-megapixel selfie camera backed by a 2-megapixel secondary shooter.

The Honor Play is powered by a 3,750mAh battery with support for fast charging. The Huawei Nova 3i on the other hand, features a 3,340mAh battery.

This goes without saying that the Honor Play with its top-of-the-line processor makes it an irresistible buy at this price point, especially if you consider the fact that its base model is priced Rs 1,000 lesser than the Nova 3i. Having said that, Huawei’s handset will appeal to those who are looking for a handset that turns everyone’s heads and are looking for impressive selfies. Quite frankly, it all boils down to the individual user preferences.
