Nokia 3.1 vs Nokia 3: what’s changed?

HMD Global, the company that currently holds right to manufacture and sell smartphones under the Nokia brand, launched the Nokia 2, Nokia 3 and Nokia 5, alongside the global variant of the Nokia 6 in February last year. More than a year later, the brand refreshed the budget lineup from last year with the launch of the Nokia 2.1, Nokia 3.1, and Nokia 5.1. Now, the middle child of the range — the Nokia 3.1 — has been launched in India. If you are wondering what has changed from last year and what is still the same, here’s a quick comparison between the Nokia 3.1 and Nokia 3 that will clear your doubts.

What’s different?

The most visible change from last year, as one might expect from most handsets this year, is the introduction of a taller 18:9 aspect ratio with the Nokia 3.1. The smartphone features a compact 5.2-inch display with HD+ resolution. In comparison, the Nokia 3 features a 5-inch HD display with a conventional 16:9 aspect ratio. 

In terms of the processing power, this year’s Nokia 3.1 is driven by an octa-core MediaTek MT6750 processor, which is coupled with either 2GB or 3GB RAM and Mali-T860MP2 GPU. If we talk about last year’s Nokia 3, the handset was powered by a quad-core MediaTek MT6737 SoC mated to Mali-T720MP1 and 2GB of RAM. With the better internals, the brand also claims that the newer smartphone will offer up to 50 percent better performance.

Last year, there was just one storage model, i.e. 16GB, but this time around, the Nokia 3.1 is available in a 32GB storage variant as well, which comes with 3GB RAM. 

Moving on to the optics, the Nokia 3.1 features a 13MP primary camera, which is a notable improvement in comparison with the 8MP rear-facing unit available on its predecessor. While last year’s Nokia 3 packed a 2,630mAh battery, its successor houses a relatively bigger 2,990mAh unit. 

What’s the same?

While Nokia 3 booted Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box, the smartphone has now received the Android 8.0 Oreo update. On the other hand, Nokia 3.1 boots Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box. Although one subtle difference is that the latest phone is part of Google’s Android One initiative, and will get an assured update to yet-to-be-named Android P. 

Just like last year, the Nokia 3.1 comes with a microSD card support that allows for expandable storage up to 256GB. The front-facing camera is still an 8-megapixel unit, which is the same as the Nokia 3. Apart from this, most of the connectivity options including a 3.5mm headphone socket, NFC, FM radio, and micro-USB 2.0 port remain the same.

Closing thoughts

The Nokia 3.1 carries a price tag of Rs 10,499 for the 2GB RAM model and Rs 11,999 for the 3GB RAM variant. The handset will be available to buy on Paytm Mall and retail stores across India. In comparison, the Nokia 3 was launched with a sticker price of Rs 9,499. As you might have already noticed, the new Nokia 3.1 brings along several improvements over last year’s model. Add to it the fact that the smartphone comes with a promised update to the upcoming Android build, and it becomes a worthy upgrade for Nokia loyalists.
