Apple iPhone XS vs iPhone X: what’s new

“Here’s everything new that the iPhone XS brings to the table”

After countless leaks, rumours and speculations, Cupertino giant Apple finally took the wraps off its latest iPhones at an event held in the Steve Jobs theatre today. Much like last year, the company has unveiled three different iPhones, making it all the more difficult for consumers to shortlist which one is a worthy upgrade over the current crop of Apple’s flagships. If you find yourself in a similar dilemma, then fret not – we’ve got you covered. In this article, we’ll be taking a look at the key differences between last year’s iPhone X (review) and its spiritual successor, the iPhone XS.  So without any further ado, let’s dive right in.

PS: For the sake of this comparison, we aren’t considering the bigger sibling of the iPhone XS, the XS Max.

Design and display

There is a running joke about how it’s impossible to tell the iPhone 8 (review) models from the iPhone 7 models, and this year is no different. The Apple iPhone XS looks exactly like the iPhone X, albeit the former comes in a newer hue of gold. That’s not a bad thing per se, as last year’s iPhone X is to date one of the most premium-looking smartphones you can get your hands on. Much like its predecessor, the iPhone XS too sports a glass-sandwich design which is held together by a stainless steel trim. Moreover, the new-gen iPhone is also quite durable with stainless-grade steel, IP68 certification and durable glass.

As was the case with the Apple iPhone X, you can expect the XS to be smudge magnet and extremely slippery too. Lastly, the newer model continues to support wireless charging and it breaks out heart to say this – doesn’t ship with a headphone socket.

Similar to the iPhone X, the iPhone XS ships with a 5.8-inch POLED panel with a resolution of 2,436 x 1,125 pixels. Therefore, just like its predecessor, you can expect the XS to have excellent viewing angles and fantastic peak brightness levels too. However, this time around, the display has been tweaked to offer 60 percent more dynamic range and 120Hz touch-sensing abilities.

Hardware and software

Unsurprisingly, the newer iPhone XS boasts faster performance to boot, thanks to the inclusion of Apple’s brand new A12 Bionic processor which is coincidentally the company’s first 7nm chip. The processor comes with 6.9 billion transistors and packs a total of six cores, comprising four performance cores and two battery-efficient cores. The CPU is reportedly 15 percent faster and 50 percent more power-efficient than the A11’s processor.

The quad-core GPU integrated in the A12 Bionic has been given a spec-lift too, and is said to be 50 percent faster. Suffice it to say, while the iPhone X is not a slow smartphone by any means, you can expect the XS to be a lot quicker and snappier.

Much like the last year’s model, the A12 Bionic also ships with a new NPU, which has also seen significant improvements too. While the A11 chip shipped with a dual-core NPU capable of crunching through 600 billion tasks per second, the A12 processor comes with an octa-core Neural Engine which can handle five trillion operations per second.

As for the storage, while iPhone X can be purchased with up to 256GB of storage, buyers can pick the iPhone XS with up to 512GB of memory onboard. However, as always, there’s no room for a microSD card on either of the two models, and you’ll be stuck with what you get from the start, so we’d advise you to choose wisely.

In terms of software, the iPhone XS ships with iOS 12, though its predecessor will also receive the latest update. The latest OS comes with some useful features such as grouped notifications, Screen Time and more.

Cameras, battery and more

Similar to the last year’s model, the iPhone XS also ships with a pair of 12MP shooters at the back, one of which is a wide-angle lens whereas the other is a telephoto sensor. However, this time around, the wide-angle camera is using a larger lens with a f/1.8 aperture. Moreover, the newer iPhone also ships with an enhanced true-tone flash which should better the quality of photos taken in the dim settings.

Lastly, the Apple iPhone XS comes with four microphones positioned towards the rear, which allow users to record stereo audio. Along with the portrait mode, the latest iPhone also lets one change the aperture to increase or decrease the depth effect after an image has been captured.  Much like the iPhone X, its successor also ships with a 7MP front camera, albeit offers faster face unlocking.

As is customary with every iPhone launch, Apple hasn’t ousted the details regarding the iPhone XS’ battery. However, the company did state that the smartphone can last up to 30 minutes more than its previous iteration.

Interestingly, the iPhone XS is the brand’s first smartphone to ship with dual-sim functionality. Apple will be selling the smartphone worldwide with an e-SIM along with a physical SIM card slot. However, the brand has also announced a true dual-SIM variant which will be exclusive to China.

Closing thoughts

It goes without saying that buyers who already own the iPhone X need not shell out Rs 99,900 (or more) for the iPhone XS as the handset is purely an iterative upgrade. That said, if you want to switch to Apple’s ecosystem or currently own an iPhone which is older than two years, then investing in the iPhone XS makes a lot of sense.

Apple iPhone Xs 1

Apple’s iPhone XS ships with what appear to be excellent cameras and is backed by possibly the fastest mobile processor too. Only time will tell just how good the smartphone really is, but so far, the iPhone XS checks all the right boxes, at least on paper. Interested buyers can pick the smartphone up starting September 28th in India.
