Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform aims to deliver enhanced battery life for wearables
“The Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform is based on new ultra-low power system architecture to deliver extended battery life”
At an event in San Francisco, Qualcomm has unveiled its latest chipset for wearable devices. Called the Snapdragon Wear 3100, the brand’s latest SoC for accessories has been designed using a new ultra-low power hierarchical system architecture approach. This architecture allows the wearables powered by this SoC to deliver enhanced battery life. Notably, the Snapdragon Wear 3100 has arrived over two years after the launch of its predecessor, the Snapdragon Wear 2100.

Coming to the features, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform has been specially built for smartwatches. The hierarchical architecture of the SoC gets four high-performance quad-core A7 processors and a new QCC1110 co-processor. The processor is also fitted with a new digital signal processor (DSP). The new wearable platform from the manufacturer offers a huge improvement in battery life
four to 12 hours of extra usage as compared to the Snapdragon Wear 2100 platform.
Qualcomm says that its latest wearable platform offers three different modes or experiences as it calls it
Enhanced Ambient Mode, Dedicated Sports Experiences, and Traditional Watch Mode. In the Enhanced Ambient Mode, the smartwatch looks like an actual watch all the time, which allows the device to show off its beauty. In the Traditional Watch Mode, a smartwatch is said to offer up to 30 days of battery life on a single charge. In this mode, the device works like an analog watch.

Moving on to the Dedicated Sports Experiences mode, it delivers the battery life of a sports watch and the richness of a smartwatch. In this mode, there are a bunch of sports experiences while GPS and active heart rate monitoring modes are turned on. The brand says that in this mode, a smartwatch can deliver up to 15 hours of usage with GPS and heart rate mode on.
Qualcomm has announced that the Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform will be available in both 4G LTE and tethered (Bluetooth + Wi-Fi) variants. The company is working with Fossil Group, Louis Vuitton, and Montblanc to release smartwatches based on the new platform first.
