Vivo successfully tests a 5G-enabled Vivo NEX; first 5G phone coming in 2019
“Vivo is working closely with China Telecom and Qualcomm to launch 5G smartphones”
Just a couple of weeks ago, OPPO successfully accomplished its first 5G trials by utilising Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X50 modem on a unified version of the OPPO R15 smartphone. Now it looks like Vivo has also successfully tested 5G connectivity by utilising the same modem.

Vivo has tested 5G connectivity on a modified version of the Vivo NEX (review). Just like OPPO, Vivo has also utilised a Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 model to successfully complete its first 5G trials. The brand said that it has concluded initial architecture planning, 3D placement stacking, antenna designs, and optimised battery space within the modified version of the Vivo NEX. The handset has completed the first phase of protocol and signalling tests using Keysight UXM 5G signalling.
Furthermore, Vivo has revealed that the modified 5G-enabled NEX supports the Non-standalone Architecture model, which has a dual connection for both LTE and New Radio, based on 3GPP Release 15 standards. Notably, the company’s first 5G pre-commercial smartphone will go through further IODT tests with 5G infrastructure and networking equipment.
Vivo is closely working with China Telecom and Qualcomm on 5G smartphone developments. The brand aims to launch its first batch of commercial 5G smartphones at some point in 2019. Looks like we can expect the first lot of 5G handsets to be launched in China initially.
