Apple to fix ‘Beautygate’ selfie camera issue of iPhone XS duo with iOS 12.1 update
“Apple will be tweaking the smart HDR feature in order to offer better selfies with more details on the new iPhones”
Ever since Apple started shipping the new iPhone XS (review) and iPhone XS Max (review) to the buyers, several users have reported that the front camera of the latest iPhones isn’t producing quality selfies. The affected iPhone users are reporting that the new iPhones are capturing selfies with overly smooth skin. The Cupertino tech giant has now acknowledged this issue, and has announced that it will soon be releasing a software update to the iPhone XS duo to fix the problem.

On the interwebs, the selfie camera issue of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max is widely being termed as “Beautygate”. Apple has announced that this is a bug in the Smart HDR camera system, which is causing the new phones to capture highly smoother-looking self-portrait. The company says that the upcoming iOS 12.1 update will fix this problem.
Essentially, Smart HDR on the affected devices is choosing the wrong base frame for HDR processing when taking a selfie. Due to the wrong frame, the front camera is not capable of preserving correct details, and is producing blurrier shots. A tweak in Smart HDR in the iOS 12.1 will allow the new iPhones to capture better selfies. Notably, iOS 12.1 is currently in its fifth developer beta version. However, there’s no word when the stable build will be released to the general public at the moment.
The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are up for grabs online in India via major e-commerce portals including Flipkart, Paytm Mall, Airtel Store, and Jio.com. In addition, Apple authorised distributors including Ingram Micro and Redington are also selling them at over 3,000 and 2,500 retail stores across the country, respectively. As for the pricing, the iPhone XS is available at the starting price of Rs 99,900, while the iPhone XS Max is being offered starting at Rs 1,24,900.
