Apple patents iPhone display with a hole for selfie camera, just like Samsung’s Infinity O design
“The Apple patent for ‘camera integrated window’ details how the company plans to house a front camera under a smartphone display”
Notches are ugly, and getting smaller every coming week. The wide iPhone X notch was adopted by Android phones across the board, but the waterdrop notch is gaining popularity nowadays. Now, it appears Apple has plans for an even smaller notch that will be reminiscent of Samsung’s Infinity O display design. A new patent granted to Apple details the schematics for a new display design that will have a hole to house the selfie camera under the screen. With this, the company will be able to make the notch much smaller and expand the screen real estate further.
According to a report by Lets Go Digital, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted Apple a patent for a ‘camera integrated window’. The device design in the patent application shows the camera hole on the top right corner. It says the cover glass will be made of a strong and transparent material and the publication speculates that Corning may develop this cover glass owing to its partnership with Apple.
Apple applied for the patent in June this year and was granted the same in November. We may see the new display design in some iPhone models in the future though it is not necessary for this patented design to make it to market.
Samsung last week showcased the Infinity O display design with a cutout on top to accommodate the selfie camera and sensors. This design is said to be making its way to the Galaxy S10 Lite model, and maybe even the standard Galaxy S10 model.
