‘iPhone XR our bestselling model’, claims Apple executive

“iPhone XR outsells the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, an Apple executive has said amid reports of iPhone production cuts by Apple”

Apple’s Vice President of product marketing, Greg Joswiak, has revealed that iPhone XR has been the company’s best-selling smartphone since it went on sale in mid-October. The statement was made in an interview with CNET, and comes after reports that have sparked concerns regarding the poor performance of the model in terms of sales.

Joswiak said in the interview that iPhone XR has “been our most popular iPhone each and every day since the day it became available.” However, he hasn’t provided any numbers to back his claims; Apple in November said that it will not release the sales figures for iPhones anymore. With no concrete sales data, it is hard to ascertain whether the iPhone XR has been selling well as the Apple models in the last few years. The iPhone XR arrived as the most affordable product in Apple’s 2019 iPhone lineup, but carries a price tag of $750 (Rs 76,900 in India), which is comparatively more than any other base model Apple has ever introduced.

According to previous reports, Apple has ordered a reduction in iPhone orders, causing supply chain partners to feel the pinch. In fact, Apple is planning to restart iPhone X production to keep its overall sales number up, claims another report.

It is not the first time Apple has experienced this kind of uncertainty. There had been reports of reduction in the production order in the past as well. One of the reports suggested cut down of the shipment orders for iPhone X last year. However, the company’s revenue increased significantly, thanks to the ever increasing price per unit of the iPhones.

With these kinds of uncertainties, especially since Apple has decided not to reveal its unit sales, it would be tough to judge whether the new iPhones are a success. However, Apple’s strategy of ‘less unit sales but higher revenue per device’ might not let the dwindling numbers hit the bottomline negatively.
