Microsoft re-releases Windows 10 October Security update

“The update was paused last month after reports of users losing their files”

Microsoft’s Windows 10 update has started rolling out again, after it was paused last month due to a software bug which caused users to lose their files. The update was first released last month but soon after, users started complaining that some of their personal files attached in Documents and Pictures folders got erased from their drives post the update. Plus, they weren’t able to retrieve the files even with recovery software. Microsoft had acknowledged the issue and understandably paused the update. Now it seems that the problem has been solved and Microsoft is re-releasing the update.

“In addition to extensive internal validation, we have taken time to closely monitor feedback and diagnostic data from our Windows Insiders and from the millions of devices on the Windows 10 October Update, and we have no further evidence of data loss,” said John Cable, Director of Program Management, Windows Servicing and Delivery. While adding that Microsoft “will continue to carefully study the results, feedback and diagnostic data before offering the update in phases to more devices in the coming weeks and months.” The company also plans to make public any issue that’s encountered with a future update through a Windows update status dashboard. They plan to implement it in the “coming year”.

The update brings some of the biggest changes to Windows 10 including a dark mode for Microsoft apps, clipboard history and cloud sync, a SwiftKey keyboard and the Your Phone app among others. You’ll now be able to save your cut and copied items on Windows 10 so you can access more than just the most recent one, thanks to clipboard history. The Dark mode on the other hand is similar to the one on MacOS Mojave and can be used to turn Microsoft apps including File Explorer, Settings and the App Store black. To install the update you can go to the “Check for updates” section in your computer’s setting.
