Netflix reportedly rolling out low-cost mobile-only plan to select markets soon

“The streaming service, Netflix currently offers three plans to its subscribers starting at Rs 500 per month”

Netflix Inc goes ahead with its proposal to introduce cheaper plans to viewers. The streaming service has recently added its cheapest plan to the subscription list. As spotted by TechCrunch, Netflix is targeting Asia users with a low-cost mobile-only subscription. The first country to see Netflix’s new plan is Malaysia with a monthly price of RM17, which converts to about Rs 300 INR.

The report further reveals that users who opt for the plan will get access to Netflix’s unlimited movies and TV shows, but the content is restricted to mobile screens only. Unlike Netflix’s other plans, you can’t consume the media on your laptop or Smart TVs. The company later confirmed the news to TechCrunch and said that the trial isn’t limited to Malaysia. Netflix spokesperson further added that similar trials are “running in a few countries”, but declined to provide full details.

The development of the new plan came days after Netflix’s Chief Executive Reed Hastings quashed talks that the company would cut prices for the hotly competitive market such as India. However, the streaming service’s other officials have previously suggested it could run a trial for cheaper plans in small markets.

“We are testing (the cheaper plans) to understand consumer interest in a mobile-only plan in some countries,” Netflix said in an emailed response to Reuters questions. The company hasn’t revealed if and when it’s planning to offer such plans to Indian customers yet. As of now, Netflix plans in India are priced at Rs 500, Rs 650, Rs 800, and Rs 950, each varying on video quality and a number of active screens. Its biggest rival right now is Amazon’s Prime Video, whose plans are priced at Rs 129 per month and Rs 999 for a year.
