Nokia 2.1 Plus with 1GB RAM, 16GB storage could be in the works

A Nokia smartphone with model number TA-1136 has received FCC certification, revealing some key specifications that hint at a low-end smartphone. This has led to speculation that HMD Global could be cooking up a follow-up to its entry-level smartphone but with more storage this time around. Purportedly called Nokia 2.1 Plus, this smartphone would not be launched in the US, the FCC listing has revealed.

The Nokia TA-1136 FCC listing, first spotted by NokiaPowerUser, shows the smartphone will have 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. To recall, the Nokia 2.1 came with 1GB RAM and 8GB storage onboard, so we are looking at an upgrade with twice the inbuilt storage. The smartphone will work on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi but the 5GHz is missing from the FCC certification, hinting at the absence of dual-band Wi-Fi on the handset.

It also mentions that the Nokia 2.1 Plus will be manufactured in Argentina; a report earlier this year claimed HMD Global is interested in producing phones in the South American country. Lastly, the application says the “hardware supports Band 40 and 66, but they will be disabled by software and therefore will not be available in US market.”

The Nokia TA-1136 was first spotted in October this year when it received Bluetooth 5.0 certification from Bluetooth SIG. However, at the time it was speculated by some publications that it will be the global version of the Nokia X7, which is now reportedly being called Nokia 8.1. It remains to be seen what name HMD Global finally decides on for Nokia TA-1136 and when it makes its way to the market.
