OnePlus 5, OnePlus 5T Android 9.0 Pie-based Hydrogen OS 9.0 Beta rolling out in China

“OnePlus’ proprietary software is called Hydrogen OS in China as opposed to Oxygen OS, which is global iteration”

OnePlus has been one of the early adopters of the Android 9.0 Pie with the OnePlus 6 (review) being one of the devices in the Beta Program and OnePlus 6T (review) shipping with the latest software out of the box. However, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau had stated earlier that the update for OnePlus 5 and 3 series will be slightly delayed. It seems that the delay is now over, at least in China, as OnePlus 5T (review) and OnePlus 5 (review) users in the country have started receiving the Beta update of Hydrogen OS 9.0 with the latest flavour of Android.

Bear in mind that this is the beta update, which needs to be flashed manually if you are on a stable update and will require a factory reset to get the stable update when it rolls out later. According to the changelog, the OnePlus 5T gets the new UI with gesture navigation, new About Phone section and call interface UI. However, the OnePlus 5 doesn’t get the gesture-based navigation as it comes with hardware soft keys below the display. The new update also brings miscellaneous changes like ability to set default card for certain contacts and group, better background app management and optimised caller ID, among others.

If you wish to update your OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T to the latest update, you will need to head to download page of the official OnePlus website and download the software build for your device. Bear in mind that Hydrogen OS is China-specific and will be missing the Google Apps package and will have Chinese as the native language. Also, before you flash the update file, you will need to back up all data on your phone. Once you have downloaded the file, copy it to phone storage and head to Settings>System Updates>click on three dots on top>Local Upgrade>Browse the zip file>Install.

Once again, it is not recommended for global users – including those in India – to flash the Hydrogen OS on their smartphones. However, since the beta testing is already underway, we can expect the stable public release to rollout soon. It’s being speculated that the stable Android 9.0 Pie-based Oxygen OS for OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T users worldwide will rollout before the year end.
