OnePlus continues to dominate the premium segment in India
“OnePlus continues to be the market leader in the premium smartphone segment in Q3 2018 as well, marking its second consecutive quarter as the reigning brand”
Back in Q1 2018, OnePlus was tailgating the South Korean giant, Samsung, which held 50 percent market share in the premium smartphone segment in India. We knew then that it was an indication of the days to come. Not too long after, the Shenzhen-based brand raced past Samsung to clinch 40 percent of market share in India in Q2 2018. And the juggernaut doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon, as IDC reveals that OnePlus has retained the top spot in the Q3 as well.
According to the research firm, OnePlus grabbed 37 percent of the market share in the Rs 30,000 and above segment, followed by Apple and Samsung. While the Cupertino giant has managed to gain 30 percent share, Samsung sits in the third spot accounting for 26 percent of the Indian market. Further, the report reveals that during the previous quarter, OnePlus also had the highest number of shipments recorded in a single quarter. This can be widely accredited to the launch of the OnePlus 6, which was one of the most anticipated smartphones of the year.
Upasana Joshi, Associate Research Manager, IDC India said, “OnePlus climbed to the leadership position at the back of OnePlus 6, surpassing Samsung and Apple. With its dedicated community building activities and high decibel promotional activities on social media platforms, the vendor has been gradually scaling up in volumes.“
The executive has rightly pointed out the community building activities and promotions helped take the brand to the top. In fact, OnePlus is known for its unconventional methods to promote products and involve its fans in the activities. With the launch of its latest, the OnePlus 6T, the brand called for all first batch recipients of the handset in India to come together for a gala unboxing event. This feat helped the brand earn itself a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the maximum number of simultaneous unboxings of a product.
OnePlus is also known for keeping pace with the technology, as is evident with the OnePlus 6T, which comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner and a waterdrop notch. Moreover, the brand is very particular about using the latest and greatest technology for each iteration of its smartphone, including utilising the flagship processor of the year from Qualcomm, beefy RAM, and powerful cameras – all at a mouth-watering price tag. The company also has a dedicated software team to constantly improve and roll out frequent updates for its Oxygen OS, which is a near stock custom interface running atop Android.
Considering these factors and the ever-growing OnePlus community, it comes as no surprise that OnePlus has dominated two quarters in a row in the premium smartphone segment, and we won’t be surprised if it continues to do so…
