Apple finally lists TRAI’s DND app on the App Store

“TRAI’s Do Not Disturb app helps consumers to curb unwanted telemarketing calls and SMSes”

Earlier this year in July, TRAI threatened to ban Apple iPhones from Indian telecom operators by January 2019, if the Cupertino tech giant didn’t approve its Do Not Disturb app in the App Store. Now it appears that to avoid the same, Apple has finally approved TRAI’s (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) Do Not Disturb application for iPhones. Notably, despite TRAI’s new regulations for the same app in July, Apple was refusing to go along with the regulatory body’s rules for its spam curbing app.

TRAi DND

The TRAI DND – Do Not Disturb app enables DND and lets users report spam calls and text messages. The regulatory authority’s app is finally available for all Apple devices running iOS 12.1 or later. After installing the app, you will be prompted to register for DND, which you can do by completing three steps including signing up for DND, enabling DND extension on your device, and reporting spam via your messages or calling app. Post this, you can easily report spam at the bottom of the message content, and any unwanted number by selecting ‘report button; during the call.

For the uninitiated, TRAI’s DND app allows you to curb unwanted telemarketing calls and text messages by reporting them to your telecom service provider. The telecom regulator first introduced this app in 2016 for Android devices, but Apple took quite some time to approve it for its App Store due to privacy concerns. Eventually, both the regulator and the Cupertino tech giant seemed to have agreed to offer a version of the app to iOS users that won’t share a person’s call or SMSes with Indian authorities, reports Venture Beat.

At this moment, it is not clear if the TRAI DND app available in the App Store offers additional privacy protection beyond what TRAI originally devised. Notably, the description of the app mentions that the registration of a mobile user under DND will take up to seven days after sumbitting a request.
