Garmin Instinct first impressions: made for trekking enthusiasts
“The new smartwatch from Garmin comes with a heart-rate monitor and features a durable design for rugged use”
Garmin on Wednesday announced the launch of brand’s first lifestyle watch – the Instinct, in India. Launched in attractive Flame Red, Graphite, and Tundra colours, the smartwatch has been designed for those who love adventurous outdoor activities such as hiking, running, biking, swimming, kayaking, and skiing. We managed to get our hands on the accessory at the launch event and here are our initial impressions of Garmin Instinct.
Right from the word go, the first thing you will notice about Garmin Instinct is that it has been designed to be durable. As the watch is meant for outdoor activities, it comes in a fibre-reinforced polymer case and is thermal, shock, and water resistant as it’s rated to meet US MIL-STD 810G standard.
Although the design is not quite innovative or breakthrough, you will be able to spot the Flame Red of the Instinct from the other end of any room as the colour is really vibrant.
The watch bands are swappable, in case you like customising your watches. Talking about the features, the GPS-enabled smartwatch comes with a built-in 3-axis compass, barometric altimeter plus multiple global navigation satellite systems (GPS, GLONASS and Galileo) support, and a wrist-based heart rate monitor. Moving on to the display, the Garmin Instinct comes with a scratch-resistant circular display. The brand claims that the high-contrast display can easily be read in bright sunlight and even though we could only manage to use the watch indoors, we don’t have any major doubts regarding the claim.
The Garmin Instinct tracks various daily activities, stress, sleep, and other wellness data. In order to gauge the data correctly, users are required to provide their gender, height, age etc. We also managed to connect the smartwatch to a smartphone during the setup process, which seems to be user-friendly and easy. Users can also access the Garmin Connect online fitness community for automatic uploads, live tracking, and the GroupTrack feature.
You can grab the Garmin Instinct from Garmin’s authorized stores, select Helios stores and Online shopping portals like Garmin’s website, Paytm Mall, and Amazon India. The smartwatch has been priced at Rs 26,990, which pits the smartwatch against the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Watch (review). However as it goes with most gadgets, we will be able to share our thoughts in detail about the smartwatch once we review it for real-world usage, so keep an eye out for that.
