MediaTek to launch 5G chipset at MWC 2019

“The MediaTek 5G SoC will likely use the company’s M70 5G-capable modem”

MediaTek today launched the Helio P90 SoC for mid-range smartphones, with Fusion AI architecture to better handle AI-related tasks. At the sidelines of the launch event, MediaTek’s Business Head of Wireless Communication Product division TL Lee told 91mobiles that the company plans to launch a new chipset with a 5G modem at Mobile World Congress 2019. This new 5G-capable SoC will, of course, compete with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipset and will be the part of the company’s efforts to tap the upcoming 5G wave.

The MediaTek 5G SoC will likely integrate the company’s M70 modem that supports 5G networks. It could be part of the company’s Helio series considering the company scrapped its X series for flagship smartphones. However, there is always a chance the brand may launch a new product range altogether as 5G presents a new opportunity for the brand to tap the flagship smartphone segment.

5G networks will start rolling out in the US and South Korea in the first half of 2019, followed by some other countries in the second half. However, we will not be getting 5G in India for another couple of years at least. Several smartphone brands have announced plans to launch handsets with 5G capability.

In fact, most of the leading players in the industry have announced they will be using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 SoC. These include the likes of Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, HMD Global, Sony, LG, and ZTE. Huawei has also said its foldable phone will be 5G-capable and it uses its in-house Kirin SoCs for its flagship phones.
