Realme U1 vs Realme 2 Pro: sibling rivalry
“Both the Realme U1 and Realme 2 Pro are mid-range offerings, but the question is which one should you pick?”
Realme has been on a roll ever since it arrived in the Indian market. Like all its previous devices, its latest offering, the Realme U1 (review) too has generated a huge buzz with its launch. This company has aimed this handset towards photography lovers, especially those who like to click selfies. Perhaps that’s why the handset offers a 25MP front camera loaded with lots of AI-based features. The company’s other phone that is also grabbing attention these days is the Realme 2 Pro (review), which prides itself on powerful internals such as the Snapdragon 660 chipset and up to 8GB RAM. But if you’re confused between the two, let’s compare both of them on every little aspect to give you a good idea about what the U1 and Realme 2 Pro stand for.
Design and display
At first glance, both these look very identical to each other. The U1 has adopted the same design blueprint that was used by the Realme 2 Pro, which is logical, given that the latter was well appreciated for its looks. Their backs are made from plastic, but they feature several layers of lamination that make their surfaces glossy. Horizontally-aligned dual cameras rest on their rear surfaces, besides fingerprint scanners. The siblings also continue with the old micro-USB standard. They do carry headphone sockets, which is a fortunate design choice. One difference however, is in their construction materials. While the Realme U1 features a polycarbonate build with a glass finish, the Realme 2 Pro sports a glass-sandwhich design.

On the front too, things remain the same. In fact, both the devices grab the same display. The company calls it a Dewdrop Screen due to the tiny notch at the top that allows the phones to boast a 90.8 percent screen-to-body ratio. The IPS LCD panel itself is 6.3 inches in size, and bears a resolution of 1,080 x 2,340 pixels. The screens are covered with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3, and while they’re edge-to-edge on three sides, the phones do have noticeable chins at the bottom.
Hardware and software
The Realme U1 is the first handset in the world to ship with the MediaTek Helio P70 SoC at its heart. This 12nm chipset renders a 2.1GHz octa-core processor at the phone’s disposal, apart from a Mali-G72 MP3 GPU. And there’s even an AI engine onboard for artificial intelligence capabilities. The U1’s 32GB storage variant ships with 3GB of RAM, while its 64GB storage version comes with 4GB of RAM. The Realme 2 Pro draws power from the 14nm Snapdragon 660 chipset, which features a 2GHz octa-core chip and an Adreno 512 graphics. This phone’s 64GB storage model can be bought with 4GB or 6GB of RAM onboard, while its 128GB storage version comes with a whopping 8GB of RAM. MicroSD card slots are present on both these phones.

ColorOS 5.2 is the software of choice for these two handsets. This Android Oreo-based ROM brings forth several AI-based photography features, while it also offers facial unlock. Split-screen multi-tasking, an improved gaming mode, app shortcuts and gesture navigation are some of this software’s main highlights. And then there are several features that are common for all Chinese ROMs like a phone manager app, a one-handed mode and more.
Camera and battery
While both these phones carry dual rear cameras, they are different in resolution. The Realme U1 carries on its back the combination of a 13MP main sensor and a 2MP depth sensor, with their aperture values being f/2.2 and f/2.2 respectively. On the other hand, the Realme 2 Pro hosts a 16MP f/1.7 primary camera and a 2MP depth sensor. This gives the latter an edge in the rear camera department. However, the U1 definitely wins when it comes to the selfie shooter. Its 25MP sensor has been equipped with a number of AI beautification traits and even a low-light mode. On the other hand, the Realme 2 Pro has a 16MP front snapper, which also grants you various AI enhancements.

Both these phones from Realme hold the same 3,500mAh battery inside them. The capacity should ensure that the phones can last a day of normal use. There’s no fast charging support though.
Closing thoughts
If you’re a selfie maniac who’s okay with the rear cameras being weaker, the Realme U1 will be the way to go. This phone is a solid offering with an attractive design, and a fast processor among other features. The Realme 2 Pro’s main difference is its adoption of the Snapdragon processor and a better camera setup on the back. The choice hence, should be simple if you know what you want from your prospective smartphone.
