WhatsApp to stop working on Nokia S40 phones today
“The Nokia S40 software runs on Nokia’s Asha series of smartphones and entry-level devices”
The popular instant messaging app, WhatsApp announced it was ending support for a number of operating systems a couple of years ago. These included BlackBerry 10, BlackBerry OS, Nokia Symbian S60, Windows Phone 8.0, Nokia S40, Android versions 2.3.7 and older and iPhone iOS 7 and older. While support for Nokia Symbian S60, BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10, and Windows Phone 8.0 OS have already ended, WhatsApp has announced that it will pull support for Nokia S40 after December 31st, 2018.

Notably, the support for WhatsApp on Nokia S40 devices was supposed to end in June 2018. However, the support was extended till December. For the uninitiated, the Nokia S40 was the brand’s choice of software for smart feature phones, which was killed by Microsoft after it acquired Nokia. Some of the phones that used the software are listed below.
- Nokia Asha 201
- Nokia Asha 205
- Nokia Asha 210
- Nokia Asha 230
- Nokia Asha 500
- Nokia Asha 501
- Nokia Asha 502
- Nokia Asha 503
- Nokia 206
- Nokia 208
- Nokia 301
- Nokia 515
This should not come as a shock as the number of people using S40 devices is expected to be negligible as the last phone running on it was the Nokia 515, launched in 2013. WhatsApp support for Android 2.3.7 and older (Gingerbread) and iPhone 3GS/ iOS 6 is expected to end on February 1st, 2020.
