Google+ user data will be deleted from April 2nd onwards

“Google’s less used and dying social network Google+ will no longer accept new registrations”

Last December, Google announced that it will be shutting down its Google+ social network service in April 2019. Now, the company has announced the exact dates for it plans to delete consumer data from the platform. The internet giant will start deleting all consumer data on Google+ starting from April 2nd. The company had originally planned to stop the services in August 2019, but due to a data breach, the timeline was moved up to April of this year.

Last year, a bug was discovered that allowed third-party developers to access customer data. Over 52 million accounts were affected by this and their personal data such as name, age, email address, occupation etc could be viewed even if it wasn’t public. However, Google claimed that the bug didn’t reveal any passwords or other details to anyone and no third-party developer is said reported to have exploited it either.

Nevertheless, Google has now given a more detailed timeline for the process. Starting February 4th, registrations for new Google+ profiles will be halted. Customers will not be able to create any new pages, communities or events either. Google will also delete comments made by users via Google+ on other websites by March 7th and on Blogger by February 4th. If you have a website that has Google+ comments, those will be deleted by April 2nd. Google+ buttons placed on other websites will also stop working very soon and could be replaced by a Google sign-in button in some cases. To reiterate, all other Google+ user data will be deleted from April 2nd onwards.

The deletion process will take a couple of months, which means that some of your data could still be visible on the service. Data such as photos/videos from your Google+ Album Archive and Google+ pages, will also be deleted. Google will not be deleting Notes data and photos / videos synced to Google Photos are all safe. Also, Google+ services for a G Suite account will not be deleted, but you will be seeing a new design and look. Users can download all their Google+ data if they want and the search behemoth has provided step-by-step instructions on how to do that.
