OnePlus halts latest open beta update as it bricks OnePlus 5/5T devices
“OnePlus has issued a statement on its community forum about pulling down the OTA.”
OnePlus is usually very fast and active with beta updates to its flagship devices but that does open the door to potential bugs that could prove fatal. A similar thing occurred with the OnePlus 5/5T today as OnePlus pushed a beta OTA with new features to its previous flagships – the OnePlus 5/5T. The update was also pushed to the OnePlus 6/6T. However, the update has been completely halted after OnePlus found out it had a bug that bricked OnePlus 5/5T devices.
A OnePlus community manager shared the message today declaring why OnePlus was halting the update prematurely. He said,
“We have received reports of OTAfailure and Device not powering on after updating to the latest open beta builds on Oneplus 5 and 5T, based on these reports we had paused the OTA updates.”

To ensure the same doesn’t happen to the OnePlus 6/6T users, the OTA has been stopped for them as well. Moreover, the community manager also shared instructions on how to flash back to safety in recovery mode for devices affected by the bug. Risks like these are very real when users sign up for betas and that’s why the beta program comes with notices that users should be aware of what they’re getting into.
Previously, OnePlus 5/5T users were the victim of boot loop issues when the update to Android Pie arrived. And more recently, OnePlus 6T users faced severe battery drain issues with many users taking to Reddit to voice their concern over the issue.
