LG won’t be launching any foldable smartphone at the upcoming MWC 2019

Despite all the reports and rumours surrounding the launch of LG’s foldable smartphone, sadly we won’t be seeing it at the upcoming MWC. The same was recently confirmed by LG Electronics mobile and TV boss Brian Kwon during a press conference in Seoul. According to The Korea Times, Kwon told reporters that, “during the Consumer Electronics Show in January, LG introduced a rollable TV. This is an advanced technology one step ahead of foldable technology. We have reviewed releasing the foldable smartphone when launching 5G smartphone but decided not to produce it.”

“The market demand for smartphones is expected to be at around 1 million but LG’s main issue in smartphone business is to regain its market position. Considering this situation, it is too early for LG to launch a foldable smartphone. In terms of technology, we are fully ready to respond depending on consumers’ reactions (to foldable smartphones),” he added. Flexible smartphone technology is still in the nascent stage and we’re yet to full-scale commercial device. And as for a company like LG who is currently trying to make a course correction, investing in an experimental technology might not be worth the risk.

Now as for the smartphones that LG has confirmed for the MWC include the 5G enabled V50 ThinQ and the LG G8 ThinQ. One of these phones is also expected to feature a fully gesture based UI, one that won’t require any touch input from the. The same was teased by the company earlier this month in the form of a press invitation.
