Google Pixel 8 certification confirms no upgrade in wireless charging speed

Highlights
  • Google Pixel 8 has been certified for Qi wireless charging by the WPC.
  • This confirms that the Pixel 8 won’t come with the new Qi2 wireless charging standard.
  • Here’s what that means for the Pixel 8.

Google is expected to launch the flagship Pixel smartphone series that will most likely include the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones. We recently shared the first look ever of the Pixel 8 Pro through a leaked hands-on video that also revealed a new temperature reading feature. A new detail about the Pixel 8 is now confirmed and it’s about the smartphone’s wireless charging capabilities.

No Qi2 wireless charging for the Google Pixel 8

The Google Pixel 8 with the model number GKWS6 has been certified by the Wireless Power Consortium to come with Qi wireless charging support. The certification also confirms that the Pixel 8 will offer a maximum of 12W wireless charging speed. This also means that we won’t see the new Qi2 wireless charging technology on the Pixel 8.

Announced earlier this year, Qi2 is an upgrade over Qi as it’s built on Apple’s MagSafe technology using magnets that ensures effective wireless charging. The iPhone 15 series is also reportedly getting compatibility for Qi2 wireless charging other than MagSafe charging, which means access to cheaper third-party magnetic wireless chargers.

There’s no confirmation on whether the Pixel 8 Pro will be compatible with Qi2 but considering how the Pixel 8 will not it seems unlikely for the ‘Pro’ variant too.

Google Pixel 8 series: what we know so far

There isn’t much known about the Pixel 8 yet but based on leaks so far here’s what we know:

  • Pixel 8 is expected to feature a FHD+ display with 2268 x 1080 resolution.
  • The smartphone along with the Pixel 8 Pro will be powered by a new chipset called ‘Zuma’ which will most likely be the Tensor G3 chipset.
  • Speaking about the Pixel 8 Pro, it will come with this new built-in thermometer that can be used to measure your body’s temperature. It has an infrared sensor that is placed at the back next to the cameras. This feature is however, said to be restricted to the Pro variant and not the Pixel 8.
  • The Pixel 8 Pro is also said to sport Samsung’s 50MP ISOCELL GN2 camera sensor that is 1/1.12-inch in size making it Samsung’s biggest camera sensor yet. A bigger camera sensor will result in photos having better images and higher resolution as well.
  • The Google Pixel 8 Pro is also expected to feature a 6.52-inch display.
