Patanjali ‘Kimbho’ messaging app launches, gets taken off Google Play Store soon thereafter
“The app was made available on Google Play Store for a day’s trial as per the company’s spokesperson”
Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali brand created a buzz recently by partnering with BSNL to launch its ‘Swadeshi Samriddhi’ SIM cards in India. Then, yesterday, the brand went ahead and launched its own messaging application called ‘Kimbho’, going up against the popular WhatsApp messaging service. For those wondering, Kimbho is a Sanskrit word which means “What’s up“. Interestingly, just a day after the launch, the messaging app went missing from the Google Play store on Android but is still available on the iOS App Store.

To clear up the confusion regarding the app’s absence from Android, Patanjali’s spokesperson SK Tijarawala tweeted that the app was made available via Google Play for a day’s trial initially, and that it will be officially launched soon. He also shared that the app’s Android version was downloaded around 1,50,000 times within just three hours launch. People who have already downloaded the app on Android can still use it, but the rest will have to wait for the full-fledged launch.
The new messaging app Kimbho allows users to send direct messages to other users or form groups much like WhatsApp. In the app description on the App Store, the company says, “Kimbho is a real time messaging app. Kimbho empowers Private and Group chat with Free Phone and Video Calling. It has dozens of amazing features to share text, audio, photos, videos, stickers, Quickies, location, GIF, doodle, and more.“
However, as pointed out by popular French security researcher @fs0c131y, the messaging app seems to be an exact copy of Bolo Messenger. And while the company says that it doesn’t save any data on servers or on the cloud, the anonymous researcher has mentioned the fact that Kimbho is a security disaster. He went on to say that messages of all users can be accessed easily.
The @KimbhoApp is a copy paste of another #application. The description and the screenshots in the app stores are the same. Moreover, the #Kimbho app is making request to bolomessenger[.]com pic.twitter.com/gOKOhash5X

Despite these issues, the app has already reached the number four position in the top social networking apps on the Indian version of the Apple App Store. The app currently carries a 3.5 out of 5 rating with 130 total ratings. The reviews mention bugs and connectivity issues but this can still be termed a strong start for the new messaging app.
