Airtel and Reliance Jio top overall 4G speeds in India: OpenSignal

“The report suggests that Reliance Jio’s overall 4G speed dropped throughout the year”

London-based market research firm OpenSignal has released its latest insights on the state of mobile connectivity in India. The company has taken the past 10 three-month test periods into account for its analysis. The firm suggests that Airtel and Reliance Jio lead overall 4G speeds in the country during the period. OpenSignal is referring to overall download speed, which includes not just the average 4G speed, but also 3G speed and availability of the network.

As per the report, Airtel, Idea, Jio, and Vodafone have taken divergent paths in their overall period during the May 2017 and February 2018 period. The firm says that overall speeds offered by Airtel, Idea, and Vodafone has increased, with the former two seeing a jump of 1mbps during the said period. In fact, this allowed Airtel to climb to the top spot in OpenSignal’s overall speed test in December, surpassing the emerging telco Reliance Jio.

Talking about the 4G-only network Reliance Jio, the company’s overall speed dropped throughout the year in this 10-month period. The report says that Jio’s overall download speed saw a big spike in May, June, and July last year, pushing it past Airtel. That speed boost is the result of network upgrades that enhanced the capacity of Jio’s 4G network, explains the firm. Once the new capacity was in place, Jio’s network began to drop as consumers started to consume more bandwidth. This resulted in Jio being placed in the second position in OpenSignal’s overall speed metric, behind Airtel but ahead of Idea and Vodafone. The report also mentions that Jio users were able to find an LTE signal over 96 percent of the time.

This is in line with OpenSignal’s April report on the state of mobile networks in India. The report claimed that during December 2017 to February 2018, Jio lagged behind the incumbent telcos including Airtel, Idea, and Vodafone in terms of 4G download speeds. However, Jio still leads the market in terms of network availability across India.
