Amazon Fire TV Cube with Alexa integration and IR Blasters goes official

“With the Amazon Fire TV Cube, the brand is trying to bridge the gap between Fire TV and Echo”

Amazon has launched a host of products in the past which make it convenient for users to stream media or incorporate smart home solutions. The brand launched the Fire TV stick (review) back in 2017, which let users stream Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, YouTube and more on the TV without needing any additional device. The brand then launched its Alexa-enabled Echo series of smart speakers to offer smart home solutions to users. Now, Amazon has launched Amazon Fire TV Cube, which intends to bridge the gap between the two aforementioned devices.

In appearance, the all-new Fire TV Cube looks like a cuboidal Echo Dot. It comes with the same four Echo buttons on top and a glowing Blue LED light when Alexa is listening. The device can stream 4K Ultra-HD media content and lets you control your TV through the Alexa integration. The Fire TV Cube comes with support for HDR 10 and Dolby Atmos Sound. The cube has a set of eight microphones, which enables far-field voice recognition to hear your voice from across the room. Additionally, Amazon has also integrated IR blaster on all four sides, which means the Cube acts like a universal remote and can interact seamlessly with the TV setup components like cable boxes, soundbar, and A/V receivers.

Speaking of connectivity options, Amazon is including a separate IR extender, which can be used to pair with accessories that are not in the range of Fire TV Cube. Further, there is an HDMI port to connect with the television and an Ethernet adapter as the Cube doesn’t feature an Ethernet port. Apart from streaming content, users can use Alexa for usual tasks like controlling smart home accessories, check the weather forecast and operate third-party apps with Alexa support, among others. Interestingly, if you ask Alexa to give you sports score, the Fire TV Cube will use its own integrated speaker but if they ask Alexa to play a show on Netflix, the TV will turn on.

As of now, the Amazon Fire TV Cube has only been announced for the US market and is up for pre-order with a sticker price of $120 (~Rs 8,100). Amazon will start shipping the device starting June 21st. However, there is no word on Indian availability and pricing as of now.
