ASUS ZenFone Ares is the re-branded ZenFone AR available at half the price
“The newest ZenFone Ares sports the same spec sheet as the ZenFone AR”
The ASUS ZenFone AR (review) was first unveiled at CES 2017 and then showcased at MWC Barcelona before being launched in India in September last year. The smartphone marked several firsts in the industry including 8GB RAM and support for both Google’s Tango augmented reality platform as well as Daydream VR platform. Almost a year later, it seems that ASUS still believes in this smartphone, and perhaps that’s why it’s been re-introduced as the ZenFone Ares, which is priced at less than half of the original device.
The ZenFone Ares retains the spec sheet of the previous handset, and comes with a 5.7-inch 2K AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 on top. The performance of the smartphone is handled by a modified version of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 processor, that has been optimised to deliver an optimal VR experience. The processor has been further mated to 8GB RAM and 128GB storage onboard. The storage can be further expanded using a microSD card. For security, the smartphone gets a fingerprint scanner embedded in the home button on the front.
Coming to the cameras, the ASUS ZenFone Ares offers a 23-megapixel Sony IMX318 f/2.0 sensor on the rear with 4-axis OIS, EIS, laser autofocus, depth and motion tracking. For selfies, there is an 8-megapixel camera on the front. The smartphone also happens to be an audiophile’s delight with features like dts-HD support, a built-in NXP smart amplifier, and ASUS’ SonicMaster 3.0. In the software department, the phone still runs the Android Nougat, which was present on the original ZenFone AR, though we hope that it’ll get an update to the new build via OTA. Powering the handset is a 3,300mAh battery with support for Quick Charge 3.0.
Currently, the brand has launched the smartphone only for the Taiwanese market and there’s no word on whether it will be launched outside. ASUS has priced the re-branded smartphone at NTD 9,990, which is roughly Rs 22,500.
