Nokia 7 Plus users face issues after Android P Beta June Security Update rolls back to Android Oreo
“The latest bug seems to be affecting only those Nokia 7 Plus users who signed up for the Android P Beta program”
Nokia is the only brand that’s offering an entire lineup of Android One-branded smartphones, which is a huge plus. However, lately, the brand seem to be experiencing a lot of issues with the software updates on its new smartphones. After the Wi-Fi bug that presented itself on the Nokia 6.1 (review), it seems to be Nokia 7 Plus‘ (review) turn now. The mid-ranger got accolades last month when it was among the few phones to receive the Android P beta update (overview). But now those users seem to facing some serious issues with the June Security update for the smartphone.
Post the installation of the security update with a footprint of 1.3GB, the Nokia 7 Plus seems to be downgrading the OS from Android P Beta to the Android 8.1 Oreo. This has caused the apps on the phone to crash and shutdown since the data is now incompatible with the previous version of the operating system. Further, the rollback package on the Android P install page is deemed useless since the package version is older than the current software that was rolled out and is no longer signed by the brand.
In order to resurrect the device from this inconvenient situation, Nokia 7 Plus users are left with two choices, both of which come with their own ramifications. One can either choose to let go of all the data on their handsets and do a factory reset. The factory reset will roll back the software to the original Android 8.1 Oreo. The second option is to flash the original Android P Beta from the download page on the Nokia website, which we have already mentioned isn’t possible because of the version number. It seems that Nokia 7 Plus users are stuck with having to factory reset their device after all.
To be fair to the brand, the brand did issue a statutory warning for those signing up for the Android P Beta program that this is not meant to be a daily driver. Users will now have to wait for a more stable solution from the brand. Until then, if you are a Nokia 7 Plus user and have received the June Security update, make sure not to install it. We’ll surely be updating this post as and when the brand rolls out an update, so stay tuned.
